Hi All,

At this point I would not call myself a webmaster, I have paid to have my site made, but am trying to run it myself so my realm of experience is very limited.

I have been working on getting some links to my site and have found a program called Arelis, has anyone heard or even used this product? Is it a good buy?

As mentioned, I am in way over my head here, so any help would be appreciated.

I've never actually used software like that, but I don't think there's much it does that you could not do yourself if you're willing to spend some time on it.

For example, there are a number of sites on the web that will check various things like link popularity for free such as http://www.marketleap.com/services/free ... efault.htm which has three tools that you can use: a link popularity tool to find out who is linking to your site and also to show you where you stand in comparison to competitors; a keyword verification tool checks to see if your site is in the top three pages of a search engine result for a certain keyword or phrase; and a Search Engine Saturation tool that shows you the number of pages in your domain that have been indexed by several search enginges.

There is also a simpler site http://www.linkpopularity.com that just checks your link popularity with altavista, hotbot and google. You can type in your competitors' sites and find out who they have linking to them.

Another excellent tool for finding backlinks to your site is the google toolbar: http://toolbar.google.com/

There is an information button on the toolbar that will show you the number of backlinks to a given site, i.e. yours or your competitors, and the toolbar also shows your PageRank (Google's measure of the importance of a webpage). Since Google is the most widely used search engine, and since it calculates PageRank at least partly by the quality of the sites that link to you it makes sense to check out a prospective link page's rank in the toolbar and trying to get inbound links from pages that are rated at least as high or higher than your own. The higher your page is rated the better it will fare in the search engine results pages.

You should also visit this thread http://www.ozzu.com/viewtopic.php?t=1475 in the search engine forum to get lists of web directories where you can submit your site. I keep a simple text file with the basic information for these types of submission and just cut and paste the information into the forms, which are generally similar.

Of course, if you have the money you could try to buy your way into Yahoo, but it's quite expensive and they don't guarantee inclusion. I don't have that kind of money to spend on my sites, so I can't offer any advice, but you will probably find more information on this and other helpful topics in the Search Engine Board and the Google Board here at Ozzu.
