I thought up an idea for a new topic.. I am going to find a picture of some genius and I will put it as my avatar and then post on this topic saying I changed it and the first person who post saying who he/she is and what they did (what makes them a known genius) will win.. I figured it would be kind of fun and educational.. Or even maybe others can do it too if they wanted..

RULES:
1. You must post their FIRST and LAST name.
2. Shortly describe how they became known as a genius.
3. First person to post #1 and #2 correctly will win that round.

For the winners of my Avatars I will make a list of each Genius in order and who the winner was in this post.. I will update it after every winner..

=================================

WINNERS:
1. SharkShark (Howard Stephen Berg - Worlds Fastest Reader)
2. ATNO/TW (Bobby Fisher - Greatest Chess Player)
3. ATNO/TW (Sho Yano - 12 Year Old Genius With The Worlds Highest IQ)
4. digitalMedia (Ludwig van Beethoven - Wrote Symphonies When Deaf)
5. joebert (Ted Kaczynski aka The Unabomber - Math genius/Professor)
6. joebert & psyc0w (Albert Einstein - World's Famous Genius)
7. JrzyCrim (Niels Bohr - Proved the new structure of the atom)

I thought It would be famous geniuses; not nobodies who created some big business or something. I was expecting to see ya know, Niels Bohr, Mozart, Eli Whitney, Johannes Gutenberg, maybe even Einstein :D

Actually, I can identify any of the men I said were geniuses. Can you? I can name their claims to fame, along with many other important figures of society. On the other hand I don't care that this guy created OxyClean (just using it for my statement). He looks familiar though, maybe he's that speed reading guy. Either way, a fat geeky guy in a business suit that may or may not be a smooth talker that probably only created a method of doing something (unless it's as foundational as Calculus via Newton and Leibnitz) is not a genius in my books.

And next time, how about we don't resort to 6th grade (again) and start insulting me.

And FIY, famous does not mean genius.

I wasn't "insulting" you.. I was talking in general.. And yes.. I have studied many many many geniuses and their work.. You think I would make a topic like this going into it not knowing a thing? I am not trying to make this a blow over.. I mean.. Come ON! How many people are going to pick Einstein out of a line up? Everyone.. If you want to know what a genius is than look it up http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=genius I am not going by what YOUR definition of a genius here.. But, I don't think you're dumb neksus.. I was talking in general.. Most people really do not know what most geniuses look like..

Yeah heart -- don't give in to impatience.. It's a great concept and better than any other "game" we have going at the general board at the moment. Just because it's hard to associate a picture with a name doesn't make it any less enjoyable. I know I have seen that man. It'll probably come to me in a few days when I'm half awake/ half asleep.

Also, ATNO.. If anyone knew this it would probably be you.. You might of read his book or know of him and his book.. *wink wink*.. That's not a big hint but just from what I know about you.. I think you would be the one to figure it out..

I've been searching a bit myself. The sad part is I probably have his book sitting in my attic in a box somewhere and am too lazy to go look for it. I'm still stewing on it. I know if I don't get it first I'm going to be ticked at myself.

If Heart hadn't given the clues that he had I was just going to say Kenneth Blanchard as my first guess because I didn't know the age of the photo in the avatar and there is a striking resemblence give or take 20 or 25 years, but his profile doesn't match the clues.

http://www.blanchardtraining.com/meetcomp/about.cfm
(One Minute Manager author)

I already know that's wrong because I feel that avatar photo is somewhat current. and the clues don't match up -- but it is a close resemblance -- particularly the smile.

I didn't -- I'm wrong as Heart said -- but I knew I recognized the face and that is how I recognized it -- they could almost be twins..

Tom Hopkins quit college after 3 months and went on to be a multi millionaire less than five years later:

http://www.aeispeakers.com/Hopkins-Tom.htm

It may not be considered in the self-help / educational gendre -- but he is by far one of the best motivational authors I've ever read.

(and I do have that one stuffed away somewhere and that's where I was recalling the picture...Now I'm back to square one on the genius thing. *sighs.

Congrats SharkShark. Guess I really wasn't going crazy -- I had seen his picture before.

For Genius #2 my first guess would have been world champion chess player Bobby Fischer who's IQ is measured at 180, but I'm already sure that's wrong. I'm guessing that picture is circa 1950's early 60's and Bobby would have been just a bit too young to look like that then.

CONGRATS: ATNO/TW!!

The picture is non other than the great Bobby Fischer.. Bobby was known and is still known as the best chess player that ever existed.. He became a chessmaster at the age of 15.. He is a genius at strategy and one of the most sought out player of the game but always with the question "where is Bobby Fisher?".. With his 180 IQ, he is a real living genius in every way..

*lol -- you're kidding? That was the first name I thought of when I saw the avatar. It was such a close resemblance to all the pictures I've ever seen of him, but it just didn't quite look like any picture I'd ever seen. In fact the basic first Google search I did showed me all the pictures I remembered, but I've never seen that one. That's quite a good picture of him.

One other tidbit I did pick up was this:

I believe #3 is Chiaki Mukai

In addition to her Doctorate in medicine and a doctorate in physiology, she is also board certified as a cardiovascular surgeon.

However, most notably she is Japan's first female astronaut.

I was thinking of suggestiing that if you could go back to number one and number two and inline image the original pictures you used in the original post question. Latecomers to this thread will never be able to see the image in question otherwsie. If you need a place for image storage for linking let me know and I'll store them for you.

I agree ATNO. Once the new picture was posted I got it immediately. I saw a show on him once, on CBC I believe. He's very smart alright, but he SERIOUSLY lacks social skills (from what I saw). It might have been a bad idea to advance him so quickly.

*lol -- I cannot tell you how many times in my life I have seen that exact picture and now that it comes down to it I'm drawing a total blank. I should have been able to type that answer immediately -- crap -- I'm sure somebody is going to beat me to this one. This one should be easy -- darn it!

I'll take the easy one, it's Beethoven.

He composed his 5th and 9th symphonies and he was deaf.

CONGRATS: digitalMedia!!!

Ludwig van Beethoven is one of the most well known people today for his masterful music. By many his amazing creativity was beyond genius, even more so the fact that he was deaf and couldn't even hear when the music stopped while he conducted his own music.. Many saw him as a bit odd and may be even crazy.. But, then again, most geniuses are..

I wasn't going to say anything until your last post when you said his whole name.. I am REALLY stressing the WHOLE name and the geniuses DESCRIPTION..

Crap -- so much for me starting college as a music ed major. I knew I'd seen that picture a few thousand times.

Again heart, let's backtrack and put the inline pics in the original questions so people can follow along and see who we have been trying to solve. Everytime you change your avatar it becomes impossible to see the original pic. (see my prior suggestion on this)

It's real simple. When you change your avatar to number 5 and post the new challenge, include the avatar pic inline in the post. Then just edit the original 1,2 ,3 and 4 to include those images inline. Then continue the trend going forward. And don't worry about your expanding sig...I'm sure that won't be an issue.

The face has familiarity, but nothing is clicking, so I'll add some thoughts and if you want to tell me if I'm on track or way off that's fine. Seems like it may be difficult for everyone else that's playing so far as well.

Given the hair style and attire I'd say this is a fairly recent picture. At least mid to late 90-ish or even more current. The gentleman behind him appears to be wearing what may be a graduation gown. Given the tweed suit and casual polo shirt underneath, I'm going to take a guess that our genius is most likely a professor somewhere (stereotyping not intended). If I'm correct so far, although it's difficult to tell the age of the man behind him, the features that I can see make him appear to be older than an undergrad so he may be a graduating grad student or doctorate student probably the former. I'm going to go way out of the box and take a guess that he may be in the New England area.

I'm also going to make the assumption that he is still alive.

Yes, although you might of never heard the name Ted Kaczynski, you might have heard his more infamous name The Unabomber. That's right, he is The Unabomber and even though he is a little crazy, he is a very very smart man. He majored in mathematics and he was a professor. He did lead a very interesting past. I highly suggest you look into him. I added him because I wanted people to see how some geniuses are using their intelligence for bad things.

Hell's yeah! That's Albert Einstein. He got famous for his relativity theory which was later used to bomb Hiroshima. He was asked to be the president of Israel or something once which he turned down. This is another fact about him not many people know of: He and his girlfriend had a girl before he got married to his girlfriend who they gave up for adoption and never heard of her again.

CONGRATS: psyc0w and joebert!!

Giving credit to both..

Yes, Albert Einstein is known as the most famous genius of all time. Although, Albert didn't have the highest IQ he is still considered the smartest man to even work the planet. He wasn't always smart, he did very poor in school and no one would ever figure him to become what he did later on in life. Albert was known as one of the most creative geniuses. His loose and funny personality really made people consider being smart as "cool". Albert has done a LOT for our current world, more than anyone could say. He has inspired millions to push themselves into doing the unthinkable. I HIGHLY suggest picking up some books on Albert because he is just so interesting it's just amazing. He has lead an amazing life that anyone and everyone can envy..

 Guess I should have read the rules, I thought you were doing the explainations. My links were meant to show where I found them.

Einstein is a great example of someone with no obvious special skills while they are young finding their nitch & sticking with it. He went from failing an entrance exam to study electrical engineering in 1895, to being a well known scientific thinker by 1909.
His words "I never realised that so many Americans were interested in tensor analysis." when visiting America in 1921 to raise money for a planned university in Jerusalum shed sort of a salesman light on him.

I diddn't know too much about him before this thread, but after reading a little about him am intrigued to read more. (I'm just good at finding them)

As a physics enthusiast, Albert Einstein has always been one of my favorite physicists. There are others who I won't name in case Heart decides to use those in the future.

In 1905 Einstein published three papers:
  • On the Motion—Required by the Molecular Kinetic Theory of Heat—of Small Particles Suspended in a Stationary Liquid (Brownian Motion)
  • On a Heuristic Viewpoint Concerning the Production and Transformation of Light (The Photoelectric Effect)
  • On the Electrodynamics of Moving Bodies (Special Relativity)

Although he is best known for his theories of Relativity, Special and General, he received the Nobel Prize for his paper on The Photoelectric Effect in 1921. Although surprising on the surface, this makes sense as his theories of Relativity were not as widely accepted at the time.

For anyone interested in Albert Einstein, Ideas and Opinions is an excellent book. It is a collection of Einstein's general writings and covers topics ranging from science, atomic war and religion to government, economics and human rights.

Niels Bohr

I would say he is best known for his discoveries of the atomic structure. The classical model of the atom had problems but by incorporating 'quanta', Bohr's Model fit experimental evidence that the older model could not. You could say it was a quantum leap forward. I know, bad pun. Anyway, he was awarded the 1922 Nobel prize for this work.

Emmy Amalie Noether

Photos: http://www-gap.dcs.st-and.ac.uk/~history/PictDisplay/Noether_Emmy.html

She was a mathematician in the first half of the 20th century, receiving her Ph.D. from the University of Erlangen in 1907. Her work in group theory, ring theory, group representations and number theory was fundamental to further mathematical principles and would prove useful to physicists and crystallographers.

In the judgement of the most competent living mathematicians, Fraulein Noether was the most significant creative mathematical genius thus far produced since the higher education of women began. In the realm of algebra in which the most gifted mathematicians have been busy for centuries she discovered methods which have proved of enormous importance in the development of present day younger generation of mathematicians.

Correctomundo! I first heard of her several years ago when reading about the relationships between conserved quantities and symmetries in physical laws. Commonly referred to as "Noether's Theorem".

Quote:
Emmy Noether's first piece of work when she arrived in Göttingen in 1915 is a result in theoretical physics sometimes referred to as Noether's Theorem, which proves a relationship between symmetries in physics and conservation principles. This basic result in the general theory of relativity was praised by Einstein in a letter to Hilbert when he referred to Noether's

penetrating mathematical thinking.

It was her work in the theory of invariants which led to formulations for several concepts of Einstein's general theory of relativity.

That was a pretty tough one Larz- at least I thought so. Good Job!
