How did you decide on your handle?

I did a search here and didn't notice the topic was already presented; if it is, just delete this one and refer me to the original, but I'm curious how everyone decided on their handle.

ATNO/TW
When I first got a computer and internet access, I knew zero, zip, nada about computers and the internet other than how to sell computers. I started seeing stuff about people writing web pages on their own and this HTML stuff. So I did a google search and located a nice little tutorial at an adult community. It was a wierd community -- not all the normal porn and stuff you'd expect to find, but just a bunch of folks having a good time. I met some people and enjoyed myself, so I created a little handle Night Owl. After a few months of snooping around the place, I discovered if I registered a membership I could get my own little webspace and make a web site of my own. However, I found that an older member already had my Night Owl handle, so I sorta decided by default to use A True Night Owl (I was always up until the wee hours back then). Just to spruce it up a bit I added some tilde's to it so the actual handle was A True ~~~Night Owl~~~ ( I love owls and always thought the tilde's looked like wings).

What a pain in the ass to type in. The end result was that my friends started refering to me as ATNO, because they, obviously, also felt it was too much to type in. Hence the ATNO part.

Later on as I started developing my design skills another designer friend who had started a design help desk asked me if I would take it over. I agreed. He had already established a handle which I assumed - The Webmaster. This same friend is the one who I co-host our sports board with. He is like a brother to me (again, an amazing thing about this beautiful internet -- I've never even met him! *lol) Before long, people just started refering to me as TW.

Although I have one or two other small handles I use here and there, those have been the two that have meant the most to me, as both of them helped me progress to establishing a new career. Isn't the internet amazing?

So there you have it. That's how ATNO/TW was born. Just a compilation of my two favorite nicknames my friends have given me. For short I just go by ATNO -- I liked it so much I chose that for the name of my web domain http://www.atnoproductions.com (ATNO Productions).

Well, for me it's like this.

My last name is Thys, that turned into Tisse as a nickname. Now, I have a brother and his friends started to call him that as well.

Since I was the real one, I had to change it so that became the real tisse. Since there are lots of sites that don't allow spaces (and the hotmail addy either for that matter) it became the_real_tisse.

Voilà

:D

ps: just in case, apparently tisse means to pee in Norwegian, and yes, been made aware of that ;)
Guess I am the one and only real tisse :D

I interpreted the first sentence (I think - I have about 75% German blood -- but don't know the language). I think you said:

My father is German and my mother is Australian.

Is the second sentence -"I was born in Australia"?

If I got that right?, I'm pretty happy with myself! *grins

P.S. Thank God for German music!

I had just watched a British comedy show and they had said "Schmeg". I thought it sounded funny and put a 007 at the end because I was 12 or 13 when I started using this handle.

well I got this nickname because I break allot of things, tools, computers, stuff like that. I tried to get the handle destroyer, but somebody already had that on MSN, so I thought about it for a few minutes and came up with ModernDestroyer. Computers being modern stuff that I occasionally broke either intentionally or accidentally, usually playing quake 3 arena, I would die and then I would start pounding on the keyboard  If anybody walked in while I was playing quake 3 they would turn around and walk out

My name has multiple meanings.

One of the meanings is getting caught up with technology and how it seems that no matter how recent you get something another thing comes out that is better so it is pretty much like you are beta testing everything before they make it better.

And another meaning is basically like soul searching. It refers to looking within yourself and discovering who you are. If that still doesn't make sense, think of "lost" as not knowing who you are and "beta" as being the version of yourself that still needs fixing. Help at all?

Those are what my name means to me and why I chose it.

It is nice to see many of you have cool meanings behind your names. My name really has no cool meaning. I simply grabbed them for practical purposes. I use Bigwebmaster as my handle because I own bigwebmaster.com. I chose bigwebmaster.com because I really wanted webmaster.com but of course that one was taken. So I then started looking for other website names with the word "webmaster". I liked BigWebmaster because Big is only three letters so the majority of the word is still webmaster. I have been to a few forums before where people start off criticising me because of my handle. They think I chose that name because they think I have an ego problem so they usually aren't too friendly with me at the beginning. One guy acutally came to my site and saw one of my scripts (guestbook script) and found every single problem with it just to prove that I was not the Big Webmaster. Its all good though :)

I also think its great to see how people got their names. It's actually quite facinating. I've had so many over the years, they all tend to revolve around either 'musik' or 'maniac' lol

Quote:
They think I chose that name because they think I have an ego problem

well, don't you?? i agree with that 100%  hehehehe jk :P

i actually have to give some credit to bigweb for my identity (he might
dispute this, but i like my version of the story best ;)) --

I used to use a web design company name of iDezigns. However,
through a poor decision on my part to join forces in business with a
family member, the name was absorbed into his company. I'm a sucker
for change and new things, so it didn't really bother me too much to
find a new name. In fact, I welcomed it! I was excited to think of
something new because I had that name for a couple years anyway.

*flash forward - 9 months later*

ok, now i'm obsessed. this whole ordeal of finding a new name was
consuming me, and taking up a lot of my day's thinking time.

I still hadn't found a name that i was 100% happy with. I chose a few
and used them for a few months, but my thinking and brainstorming
never ended. I actually spent HOURS at a time some nights searching
and browsing sites for inspiration and name ideas. Bigwebmaster was
one of the people that actually participated in these exercises of futility
and frustration, and even then we could never seem to hit a homerun.

Well, at one point, I just decided to sit down and write out all the words
I liked in terms of computers, myself, and web design. After carefully
narrowing down to a few words, the word FLUX was there.
Quote:
flux (fluks) -
1. Constant or frequent change; fluctuation
2. A substance that aids, induces, or otherwise actively
participates in fusing or flowing

fusion was also one of my words. I like the idea of fusing different styles
and formats into a web design. I liked the sounds of construction the
word gives. so, i liked flux best, because it incorporated all these things
in a single word.

However, nothing I tried with the word flux was any good. In fact, I
actually gave up on it.

Then in a last-ditch, "this is the last time" effort, I went searching again.
I was chatting with Bigweb, and he was making fun of me for my lack of
a name, so he started rattling off a bunch of ideas that we had never
thought of before. The discussion turned into how we have worked
together for quite some time, and it would be cool if our names were
both noticeable and unique, but fit together well. So, i started using
the prefix un- on the list of words I liked. The idea came from his own
enterprise name of unmelted (which i always tell him i'm gonna take one day ;)).

I came to flux and said out loud UNFLUX -- BAM! -- it hit me that that
was it. no question, 100%, that was my name. All the philosophy I had
mulled over countless times in my obsession for an identity had just
exploded into one 6-letter word, and it was absolutely PERFECT.

UNFLUX - the only constant is change

it was time for me to settle on a name and stop changing. making it
permanent and forever = U N F L U X. It has a nice techy sound to it,
while having some dignity and stability. All of these things are important
to me, so I just knew that was it.

I've never even thought once about a different name - not once.

7 yrs ago, when i first started in chatrooms, i was a complete chatroom newbie, a bit like i am on here, didn't know anybody, or any of the slang etc ..

after a few hours, i got to know SOME of the then confusing 3, 4 + 5 letter phrases, being typed glibly by the ppl in that room, BUT only after much frustration by the other members in the room, with me constantly asking "what does that mean?", the phrase "lol" took me.

as it was one of the first words i knew, i started using it .. for EVERYTHING .. most of u probably know, that ppl in chatrooms, have nicknames for the other ppl in that chatroom.

So my nicknames went from my original aol name, to "lol queen", and then 2 "lol aholic", which then evolved into the name i use today

i still love lol now, altho, it's been somewhat overtaken by "pmsl" as my general purpose line ender :)

Ok, I did a quick search for "name origins" and didn't see any other threads on this topic, but if it's been covered already I apologize.

Anyway, I see some interesting screen names here and am always curious to hear the story behind how that person came to pick that name. I'm sure there's more than a few that couldn't think of anything better and just put down a name. But, if you do have a story, what is it? I'll start:

Waaaaay back in 1997, i was sitting at my desk at work after hours surfing the web. I ran into Yahoo and wanted to set up an email account (it was so long ago, I still have a 6MB inbox instead of the newer 4MB inbox.)

So I'm sitting there trying to think of a screen name when I realized the album "The Yes Album" was playing in my cd player. Now, I'm a huge Yes fan, so I thought it would be appropriate to reference that somehow. The song that was on at the time was "I've Seen All Good People" (some of you old timers might remember that one!) One thing led to another, and I chose all_good_people@yahoo.com for my email. Ever since then, I've stuck with various versions of all good people whenever I've needed a user name. Sometimes there's spaces, sometimes there's underscores, sometimes periods. But it's always all good people.

Who's next?

mark

ps - now i've got that friggin' song stuck in my head :banghead:

Mine username is very dry.

My name is so common that variations of my first and last name are almost always previously taken. Rather than having to remember a variety of username and password combinations for on-line accounts, I use my e-mail address (without the @ symbol). Its almost certainly guaranteed to be unique and I definitely won't forget it.

That just leaves remembering a pile of different passwords. :-(

well, my original handel was CaeruleusLux, which loosly translates to Dark Blue Light in latin, (although i convieniently forget about the blue part, so it becomes Dark Light...) and like with you ATNO/TW, ppl thpought it was to long, so it got shortened to Cae, which i still use...

Calendae, is a similar version of Cae, and i just like how it sounds, i have no idea where i found it, but someone told me a while ago that it means 'first' in latin as well (no i do not speak latin, i ask ppl and use dictionaries to figure this stuff out...)

well, thats the history of Calendae...

My new version of my name.

How it came about:
I decided 'Insane Mastermind' was too long, and I didn't like it.
I also decided 'XeniumX' was just not right for me.
So then, I took a day or so, and thought, 'Hey! I like the radioactive elements! Why not use one of those!?!' So I did, but I changed one letter, and I pronounce it [PLOO-TON-E-UM]
I hope you like PluTunium!

Yes.. So that is how I came about 'PluTunium'

I do belive that names are inportant, I think I just may have realised a difference in a way of read. By that, I think that the way you read is almost that you say the words to yourself in your head after you read them. When I read it has absolutely no connection to spoken words. I see letters, words, sentences and paragraphs, but I do not see or hear sounds. In that sense I have no 'observation' as to how written words may be pronounced. I did not intend to offend your belief in names, nor the way you read, and I apologize for this misunderstanding.

I read it. If I want to hear it I have to read very slowly, then speed at which I can talk, which is much slower than the speed I can read. I can look at 4-5 words in one glance, but I can most certainly not say 4-5 words in that time

How funny! I do the same thing ATNO/TW, but I thought I was the only one. In fact, if I can't pronounce a word I see on the page in my head, I just skip over it and keep going.

I find the worst is when I run into abbreviations or text that really isn't pronouncable. It's most noticeable for me when I'm writing HTML code. I'm literally talking to myself in my head as I write the code (sometimes I even get bad enough to mumble it to myself as I'm writing). I'll say </title> as "close title" or whatever the tag name is.

What would that be called, aural reading?

well, my name came from when I got my tattoo...

Let's see if you can visualize...

I have a tattoo on my lower back of an angel facing backwards, crosslegged, with no clothes (i.e. natural). She is inside a star, and she in turn has a star on her back... maybe I'll just post a pic... ooh maybe I'll create a thread about tattoos!! My tattoo was designed by a really good friend of mine, so it's very original.. one of a kind.. like me! :P

anyway, that's where "natural" and "angel" came from. I added the underscore because I hate it when I can't read something that is 2 words put together. The 33 came because I thought it looked like angel wings, although now I see doesn't really...

I happened to look at the Members list and was just curious.

I came up with Carnix about 6 years ago. I was working trying to get some stuff working on a Unix box and was looking for an answer to a question online and need to create a user account for a message board. The server's name was "Carpathia" so I came up with Carnix. I've more or less kept it ever since.

I though it was quite clever an unique at the time... I've since been relieved of that belief and have seen a number of carnixi here and there. Turns out, it was also the name of a celtic battle horn (spelled carnyx).

The FreeBSD mascot is a Daemon, often and inaccurately named "chuck". The appropriate and accepted name is "Beastie", (for BSD-ie).
I am a FBSD enthusiast, and I am a guy -- at least the last time I checked. :)
Hence, Daemon-Guy.

Not very imaginative, but I left those days behind me, along with my old monikers. ;)

Didn't think of that term since I don't refer to it as a handle
I searched for "user name" "username" "how did you decided on your username" "where did your username come from"

Silly me.

Although, actually searching for "handle" doesn't show that thread, not on the first page anyway... nor does "how did you get your handle" or "How did you decide on your handle?" which is the topic of the thread in question (it shows up half way down page four).

Sorry for the imposition.

Umm, my two different S/Ns were either tomis-maximus and/or tom the great. I used them for accounts on Diablo 1, and since the first forum I joined was a diablo forum, I just used my account name, then i Just kept the name for all the other forums I go to.

Well my name was something I actually came up with when I first started playing around on the internet. I used to go into a virtual chat program called Excite VP. I used a few other names that never fit me just right. I searched a long time through names and finally came up with this one from greek mythology.

Talos
Talos was a bronze giant made by Hephaestos. His duty was to protect Europa who gave birth to Minos after being seduced by Zeus. He threw boulders to frighten strangers who approached the island of Crete. He was killed when Medea removed the pin that held the life force in his body.

I have used this name for just about everything from that day on. I even created 2 characters in everquest using this name back in my addiction days. but thats how it came about.

My screen name kinda came about funny. When StarCraft first came out, I had the sn Reifleman. After that, I went on vacation for about three weeks. When I got back, I had gone over to my friends house, and we were playing SC on his comp. When I tried to log into it with my old sn, I couldnt remmember the correct password. My friend just happened to have a sn, Smokenjoe, that he used to start fights with people when he was bored on B.net(he was wierd). He let me use that one. After a while, the name just kinda stuck, so I changed the password so that he couldnt log on with it anymore. Ive used it ever since! Its funny because my name isnt Joe, and I dont smoke.

I got my name cuz of my girlfriend. Her initials are J.N. For this forum the reason for Liquescence was pathetic... I wanted something cool to name my web hosting, so I spent a day going through the dictionary picking out random words... and I ended up with this...

One day back in high school physics class we were talking about prisms. For some reason when I needed a new handle, I chose that because it sounded cool and I don't remember seeing a lot of people use it. The "PrISM" just looks better than "prism" or "Prism" in my opinion.

"SinisterDexter" has been with me for almost five years now, and gone through many, many, MANY minor changes, but I eventually just reverted to this. As for it's origin, one of my friends found out that "Sinister" meant left, and "Dexter" meant right[or is it the other way around?], and when you have left and right you have balance, and I'm fairly "unbalanced", so..........I didn't come up with it, so don't look at me like that! But it stuck, so I kept it.

Nickname from bicycle-racing... apparently my style of riding mirrors that of Mario Cipollini (a.k.a. The Lion King). He won (over the years) tons of stages at the Tour de France in sprints, and for each stage win the winning rider gets a toy Lion wearing a yellow jersey... amongst other things like a bouquet flowers and being pictured with half-n@ked French ladies.

Gee... I'm glad they didn't call me Bouquet !

I went to a school that had 6-9th grade, there was one 9th grade class with about a dozen kids in it, one period a day that class was split up & each student was assigned as a teachers assistant. 8th grade year I was in "the room" so often they had no problem with making me the teachers assistant there for 9th grade.

Now that I think back on that I can't believe I actually recieved Highschool credit for being in "the room"

This213: I used to refer to myself as "This" all the time, refering to my physical self in the OOP style of $this (which is why I usually sign "This" if I sign a post at all). The meaning behind that is that I believe I'm much more than just "This" and this is nothing more than just "This". The 213 is to show that "This" isn't quite in the right order and still has to run through a sort or two.

YZIX: I used to use yzxix as a sn long ago. I was dumping the sn I had used since either before or just after AOL was internet-capable, (semitekie) because I figured I was full-on tekie, but I couldn't think of a decent replacement. yzxix was more what I was thinking when I gave up on the search than an actual name - like a sudden burst of electricity. YZIX came about because it's actually pronouncable (somewhat), and the domain name was available (and only 4 letters long)

I think that about sums up This

Sometimes I will use Truce on forums and such, and other times I use TruceTech (usually when you have to have 8 chars). Now I am evolving the name into Truce Designs, but I have still kept the Truce.

Mine came about from listening to a Conference Call one day actually. In the Marketing Company Im in, there are several teams. One of teams is fast becoming the largest one in the comapny. When I first started I wanted to model my team after the best in the business. And this team really got my interest. I managed to aquire the codes and times to their team Conference Calls and listened in one day. They were talking about not quitting, and being determined to win. Turns out that their mascot is the Shark, and to keep each other motivated, they say Shark Shark! A couple of months later, I was having a tough time, I had some people leave my team, and I wasn't making any money (being that this was my only form of income that wasnt a good thing :P ) I was sitting at home one day, trying to figure out what went wrong and how to fix it, when I suddenly remembered that conference call. I made up my mind right then I wasnt going to quit, closed my eyes and whispered Shark Shark! to myself. Two hours later, I sponsered one of mystrongest leaders that I have today. So, even though the Idea wasn't originally mine, it became mine when I needed it. Hence, when I needed an Online nickname, since I still hadn't decided on a name for my website, I just decided to use my favorite phrase.

SHARKSHARK!!!

I was playing Tribes 2, and I couldn't come up with a name, so I read a label like on a toy that says Danger: Choking hazard, so I used Danger, but it was taken. I decided that I should just put numbers at the end, but I hate doing that. I realized I could just make it look like a part of the name and look (this is gonna be corny) "high-tech ish" lol. So I added X3 to the end. Ever since then that has been the screen name I use.

i usually alternate between "sleepee" and "katana".
I use "sleepee" as a shorter form of "kindasleepee", which is related to something on the liner notes of a radiohead CD, and which I used as a handle on a radiohead chat room.
I use "katana" (as in the japanese sword) just because I'm interested in japan, and ninjutsu.

Uh, when I was around 10 years old I was playing a game called Ultima Exodus. It required you to make a ton of names for characters (sometimes) so at one point I was making a wizard and I thought of the name Summon. But it had to be 5 letters. So I changed it to Sumen, and I pronounce it in my head like Summon. I used it once in a community site and it stuck pretty well.

My other handles are Dawn Of Night, Assault, and IAmCatastrophe

Assault for when playing games, because I like strong offensives and my friend likes to play on the name Battery (we team together). I Am Catastrophe is because catastrophe is always taken. And I actually like Dawn Of Night the most but if I use it im often mistaken as a female. It is nice sometimes because people treat you so much more nicely :p

I used to play Starcraft all the time on Battle.NET, where I used the name LucasSix.

The name comes from Starcraft. If you play Protoss and click on a scout, he makes these two sounds:

http://home.satx.rr.com/airforcedave/lucassix.wav

To me it sounds like he is saying "Lucas acknowledged. Teleport six escape."

My name is as simple as this...was thinking of an ID to have on a forum i was a member of and had a look around the room for the first word that didnt seem too questionable and seemed quite good and i came across my computer speakers which at the time were 'Screenbeat' which i broke down eventually to SB which is as you see it to this day.

Having said that, many times i have changed the meanings of SB to certain words representing certain times of year...for example, xmas time i would be called something like Santa Beat(er)...not that i am particularly keane on that! :D

I have 4 main ones that I use (depending on the focus of the site or community I'm at)

My main one is Hitek. I've been using it since my C=64 BBS days. It's just a clever acronym for my first name (Keith) I use this one on ICQ, my personal email address, IRC chat sessions, but it's damn near impossible to get on any active forum now, so I don't even try anymore.

My Secondary is ScienceofSpock, which I picked on a whim while trying to find a MSN email address that wasn't taken and didn't require a string of numbers after it. It kind of fits (I AM a trek fan, and consider myself intelligent) so I stuck with it. I use this on technical forums and communities where the members are generally helpful.

GapingWound - This was just horific enough to suit my sometimes dark sense of humor, and fits well with FPS gaming forums, so that's where I use it.

Mapfiend, this one I use on my site, and any forums that deal with online RPG's.

As a side note, I once had the AIM ID of "toomanydamnpeopleusingaimtogetagoodusername" but I have since changed it :)

I like to "say" the words I read in my head, just like ATNO. But in school I was put in a speed reading class, and they didnt like us to do that. Just like you said, purple peep, they like u to read a bunch of words at one time without saying them, cus it slows u down if u do. (We even move our mouth muscles without realizing it if we hear it in our heads.)

Well, this name is obviously my own. It is also the one I use in the game SubSpace, though in that game, it is written, SamHughes, without a space. Pretty much every username I've had has been some variant on my name or my initials.

Oddly, some people were surprised when I told them it was my actual name. But I didn't choose the name of a Canadian general or a Tucson elementary school on purpose! :)

One exception is the username "rashakil," which I've used from time to time when I don't feel like being recognized. This username is actually a randomly-generated password that I once got when registering for a usenet server. I was very surprised at its pronouncability, so I used it. I am sure it was random because on other occasions of registering for the usenet server (I forgot the password after each of a couple of reformats), it was a mix of letters and numbers.

Sweet. I spent many, many hours on my Commodore 64 and then on my Amiga. The good old days of working OS and stability.

I wanted to revive this topic out of pure interest.

My handle has been with me since high school. Its a mix of my full family name: first and middle initial (D.A.) and snippet of my last name (REMEDY). Its also fitting that my family comes from a musical background, so we have "the remedy". I'm also known as a very helpful person, and hence I'm "the remedy" to the problem. I have dozens of aliases I use across the net and I have a whole slew of nicknames that my friends/family call me, but daremedy is one thats just stuck.

I dont know why i picked this name.

I was quite interested to read about ATNO's name. Iv'e often wondered what it means. It had to mean something, its not the type of name that has no meaning.

It was also interesting to read him talking about when he was new to the net. I cant imagin ATNO being new to the net, I thought he was born with his hands on a keyboard.

The Alan part comes from a mix of Alex, my first name and Stan, the name of my favorite song from Eminem.

The Lastufka part is a bit more difficult... the Last part comes from Last Name, which is on many of the forms I fill out when I use this alias. The stuf part comes from "The Right Stuff" by New Kids on the Block - cause I can never get that song out of my head - I just dropped the second 'f' to make it look more authentic as a last name. and the ka part was supposed to be 'aka' - but I mistyped...

Actually, its just my name but that seemed too boring to post. ;)

Honestly... It's a nonsense word, There is a rather long story as tho how exactly I come up with it, but it is a carefully guarded secret which no-one has ever been told. Basically though I played around and came up with a nonsense word i thought sounded like a pretty cool net name. The interesting thing though is that it is on paper only. The word is not to be pronounced. I have never told anyone exactly how I envision it, because really, I don't. It is to be merely a writted (typed) word.

Well I started off as Kai Tron which was a character I designed for my comics because I'm an big artist. I love drawing. So anyway... I use to RP online so I had a yahoo name Kai_Tron which i still have. The character is a represtation of my inner self. And then people I knew had aim so I went there and made name but Kai_Tron which is 100% original was taken. So to keep with my character I added LordKaitron which is my aim name... Because the character is a son of a King and all his servents call him lord. So to make it short I just made it Lord Kai although my other name (Dread Vicious) is a bigger and longer story.

When I first got the internet, I joined a message form that was used to get codes for a game device known as "gamshark". The tool is used to "hack" games, and change values to unlock secrets, and get inf. ammo and stuff. Anyway, I chose the name "Hacker" because I liked to hack GS codes, but it was taken there so I threw on "007" as in James Bond 007 :D

From there, I joined more and more communities, but the name "Hacker" turned quite popular, and a lot of people have come to use it. So now just about everywhere but here I use "Soup Nazi" as my nick name. Because thats my favorite episode of my favorite show, seinfeld.

Psilo - derived from the psilocybin mushroom, also known as the magic mushroom. Something I used to have a bit of a passion for, however now adays its not something I have much interest in. Also note that the P is silent.

Kan - derived from Shotokan karate. In japanese this means "house of" or "hall of."

Together it should be pronounced like "silicon"

I came up with this back in college when I was walking home from Karate smoking a joint... Oh how i miss those days :)

Ed - a good short name

Womack - another good name and it sounds a little like "wombat" which is a great word, but "Ewombat" didn't seem to work, so I stuck with my own name.

Pretty exciting, hm?!!?

LOL Sam sometimes you say the most profound things!

Mine is from when I started learning all this non-sense. My mentors used to tell me that I was like a bull dog and wouldn't let go until I found an answer to the problems they had set before me.

But no offence to bull dogs they aren't my favourite, so I tried to find something a bit more along the lines of my favourite dog which is as you all know by now a Stafforshire Terrier. It also best described my personality as I am extremely passionate about everything that I do or attempt to do.

Dictionary
Quote:
Main Entry: ra·bid
Pronunciation: 'ra-b&d also 'rA-
Function: adjective
Etymology: Latin rabidus mad, from rabere
1 a : extremely violent : FURIOUS b : going to extreme lengths in expressing or pursuing a feeling, interest, or opinion
2 : affected with rabies

and I sometimes wonder about the "affected with rabies" part

Well my name came form when i was registering for a new account on Battlefield 2. Ive used the name Raven for porbably about 5 years now in differnet clans, such as * KING * RAVEN, [ESF]Raven or [DH]Raven. So i wanted the name Raven. Seeing as i wasnt in a clan anymore i didnt have to have a tag. So i typed in Raven, that was taken. So i decided to add something in front but with an underscore because spaces werent allowed. I wanted to sound ominous :) so i decided to go for Dark_Raven but that was taken, so i tired Shadow_Raven, taken, Grey_Raven, taken. I was infuriated. I even tried Toast_Raven but that was taken!! It then came upon me that toast that is black is burnt!! So i typed in Burnt_Raven and it worked!! Ive only had the name for a week but i love it and Burnt Raven Designs is the name of my Web Design Company.

i used to play a lot of rts games (starcraft broodwar, wc3) and i hated trying to find out people stats when they had long names with a ton of numbers or @]}> <-- whatever those are called in their name, so i decided to make up a name that would be easy to type in. Came up with tredlyn years ago and have been using it ever since. I have yet to see it duplicated so i think it may actually be truly original. so ya thats just about it, nothing symbolic or anything about it

I pretty much have always thought that snakes were cool.
I don't own a snake or have extensive knowledge in them ether. It's just my handle really.
I got my first computer in 1997 and didn't know much about them ether. But I was facinated and got right into learning various code. Also I think that Solid Snake from Metal Gear Solid had something to do with it. But for some reason I have always related "snake" with code. Kind of makes me think of the behind the scenes, undercover, yet also underground freelance types that are hired for thier technical abilitys.
When I first started gaming online I started with $|\|@|<3. First learning about the 1337 launguage was really cool to me, but that wore off quickly after it seemed like everyone that used it ether didn't use it in moderation or were just complete idiots to begin with.
So I went with 5N4K3 which i have been much happier with.
The name has had a few other evolutionary changes since the begining also. But I do recieve emails from time to time from people saying "Hey you stole MY name!!"

Title says it all. If you go by a screen name or a nickname, where'd it come from?

I had a few growing up, a coule I messed around with, sold on yahoo auctions with, etc... but this "NuAngel" one has stuck for about 8 years now.

How'd I get it? Well, I had a crap/NO real nick name for a long time, but I loved computers. So much so that when a small online hacker's guild was sort of... holding "try-outs" - I went on and made a name for myself (so to speak). These were some 'good guys' - scanning ISP IP ranges and going through exploits and trojans, and sort of "locking the door behind us" as we exited systems - trying to make it so that others couldn't get into these systems and cause harm.

Anyways, during my "try out" period, they had brought their decision down to myself and another dude called "Angel." They set us up with a... contest, so to speak. Long story short I won, but didn't have a good name (Silver-Stinger or something was what I was using at the time). Somone recommended I just be the "New Angel" - and I thought "no, I'll be... NuAngel!"

I love sharing my story 'cuz it's kinda unique (and no, not a work of fiction {though it is "story-told" like one because I'm majoring in writing}. I can still put you in touch with people I "hacked and secured" back then, if you'd like!) and a little off the wall. :) But other stories are always good to hear. So where'd yours come from?

NuAngel
