Hey!

I was just wondering how many of you actually know how to 10-finger touch-type. Was also curious if there's a difference here between the young 'uns and the oldies

I definetely use all 8 fingers and 2 thumbs to type. It would be a huge waste of resources to only use my index fingers :)

I actually took a typing class in high school with old Royal typewriters. I was a bit of a disaster with an old-fashioned typewriter though. Mr Backspace Key is my best friend :)

Yes I can, and I'm over 18, but if it counts, I could before I was 18 as well.

Over the many years spent in chat rooms I have developed my own bizaare method of touch typing, I am sure a typing teacher would be horrified is they saw me in action hehe

I somehow manage 72 WPM with 96% Accuracy using six fingers. My right hand just doesn't touch type. But my left will work with just about all of its fingers. Needless to say my right pointer could hurt after a while. I think it is getting used to it though.

lol, a friend of mine types about 60 WPM 2 finger typing. We were in our networking class and I was watching him type and I was like "WTF are you doing man?" and he replied "this is how I type". So after like laughing for 10 minutes or so (being in a computer networking class I thought he would have known how to type right so it was funny) I started to watch him and he was actually typing faster than me (this was a long time ago, I type much faster now) so I asked him how many WPM he can type and he said around 60. I'm sure he's faster now though.

Lesson: Everyone has their methods to type that work for them, some just cause carpal tunnel syndrome faster than others.

i can type pretty well, I think. I use all 10 fingers but i don't actually use
the conventional way of resting all 8 fingers across the middle. My left
hand pretty much follows convention, but my right hand is all over the
road. I do 60+/min and it works for me. Don't have to look at the keys
either, which is my biggest proud moment.

My results paying attention to errors:

38 WPM Gross
0 Errors
38 WPM Net Speed
100% Accuracy

I'm not a fast touch-type typer, but I just conditioned myself to correct errors as I go. I prefer accuracy over speed. I tried to do the test without trying to fix errors and my net result got worse the more I did it (I could not execute that test without trying to fix errors. I'll take it though -- for what I do, that's fine with me.

Nice link - I bookmarked that one.

--------------------

Now on the other hand, if you just asked me to type? -- sometimes when I type, even though I know how to touch type -- I look at my fingers on the keyboard, vs. the results on the screen. I seem to type better that way if I'm creating it myself and not copying something. I think I might be better at doing that. And to me that's more important since most of the stuff I type is what I create vs. copy. My guess is I probably trend better to 50 to 60 WPM's if I'm typing my own stuff.

Afterwards, I'll review what I typed and spell-check it if necessary.

I type with 9 fingers...what the heck do you use your second thumb for? You mean to tell me that you alternate which thumb hits the space key? That would confuse the heck out of me

Gross Speed - 92 WPM
Errors - 1 Words
Net Speed - 91 WPM
Accuracy - 98%

Test name - Huckleberry Finn

I've been typing 70-90 WPM since I was in Jr. High. My parents made me do Mavis Beacon teaches typing for 10 minutes a day, every day of the summer. Oh, and I'm over 18 now; 20 to be exact.

Copying stuff from the screen and just typing from your head is two different things.

I took the test and got
41 wpm
100% accuracy

but if I'm chating online and in the grove
80+ wpm
80% accuracy

Then again maybe I full of it :D

I took the test and got 78 WPM at 89% accuracy. I think I can do better though (accuracy wise at least), just depends on when I do it. Sometimes I just suck at typing while others i'm super duper.

Stupid keyboards

I never realized this before, but as I was typing something out I was watching my thumbs and I now know I only use one of them. I never use my right thumb. My left thumb does all the work at hitting the space bar. I guess I use 9, not 10! It is funny things you do not notice until you pay close attention. I just always assumed I used both thumbs!

Hmm, interesting.... I just watched myself typing and I alternate thumbs.

If the last letter of the word I am typing ends in a letter that I type in using my left hand I use my left thumb to hit the space bar, but if it ends in a letter that I type using my right hand I use my right thumb to hit the space bar.

I never noticed that before, kinda freaky!

Yeah, so it seems, we're all pretty good typers. Did anybody notice that the world-record is around 220 WPM!? And that 'best-typist-in-the-world' can sustain 150WPM for 50 minutes!

Phew! Those keys must be SMOKIN'!

I would be curious to see if there is a correlation between which hand you write with and which thumb you use for the space bar. Even right now I find myself using the right thumb all the time and occasionally using the left one. I'm also right handed. Something to think about :D
