The older formula for determining a person's intelligence quotient (IQ) (IQ = MA/CA) was altered by Stern to read, IQ = MA/CA x 100. Why did Stern make this adjustment.

1. it made the formula truly age-specific
2. it got rid of the decimal in the final IQ score
3. it made the score more academically relevant
4. it created a more accurate "norming" system

Oh good god, trying to remember back to college psychology.

Wasn't it Lewis Terman who added the multiplier, not Stern? Though Stern actually coined the phrase "Intelligence Quotient".

As I recall, the multiplier was added simply to normalize the output; 100 being a standard to work deviation from. In any case, this test was only valid for children since we tend to flatline as adults, as Mental Age does not steadily increase throughout the lifespan, but Chronological Age does.
Again, wokring from recollection, they have since ceased using MA, and begun with deviation IQ.
Deviation IQ uses a scale which is based on the actual rarity with which ratio IQ scores actually occur. Thus, it deflates the bulges in the curve, and makes a smooth bell-curve out of the data.

I quit psychology after 2 lessons. I asked the teacher why she had taught us two things that totally contradicted each other and she said she didn't know..... I wasn't too impressed by her lack of knowledge

Sounds like normal distribution to me, which is almost certainly the best model for something like intellegence, isn't it?

in answer to your question I recon it was just to make people feel better - noone wants an IQ of 1.2 now do they
