I sorta snuck in through a backdoor, but happy to have found this place. Perhaps I should have started off here, but what the heck...we all have to start off somewhere, right?

So...a belated introduction...

I'm just your average "almost" 44 year old guy who's looking for a career change. Been doing some freelance web design work for the last three years and wanting to either start my own business or get into Network admin stuff (or both). After almost 17 years of retail management, I have made a vow that I am never going back to it!

I have a fairly broad knowledge base -- not much of an expert on anything, but taught myself anything to do with web design and am very familiar with most OS's and Servers (ie. Windows based) -- need to gain a little more familiarity with Novell and Apache, etc...but getting there.

Things I believe in:

The only constant is change
If you don't get what you want in life, you'll have exactly what you deserve....

Hullo everyone! My name is Ally, I'm 15, and I'm from Florida. I stumbled across this site while searching for programming help. Everyone here seems to be fairly nice and I have a feeling that I can learn a lot. As of now I only know HTML and JavaScript, but I am very interested in learning Perl and PHP.
My mom is always warning me about conversing with "weirdos" online, so I just request that you not get too weird. :roll: If that's not possible (and I know that it is not for some people) I'm afraid that I'll just have to stop coming here. :cry:
Anyhoo, help with getting started out with Perl and/or PHP would be much appreciated!

Welcome to the board Geekette. Hopefully you can learn lots of information here and can contribute and help others from time to time. We would love you to stick around, as our goal have everyone learn something and help each other out :)

As far as weirdos, just do not give out any personal information ever, and if anyone bothers you on here report that person to a moderator and the problem should be resolved.

Perl and PHP is a good place to start for programming. Here is the first place I started to learn about how to use PERL, you might check it out:

Its good for beginners, but there are better resources if you are concerned about security of your applications.

Don't worry about wierdos as long as you stay away from unflux you'll be fine ;)

Bonjour! My name is Andrew, I'm 16 and right now putting great effort into summer break. I know limited amouts of HTML, Javascript, and CSS. Don't look for me to be giving advice, I'll mostly be taking it. I also enjoy photography and image editing, I know my way around Paint Shop Pro...Woo! Anyway...
