i work for technical support for Charter Communications for thier Pipeline internet service. i have been a guru of Windows since windows 3.11. and have always been the first to upgrade to the latest versions when they come out. so for this i will be moderating the windows forums, hopefull providing some help to those who need it in those forums.

I also LOVE gadgets, i mean if it is high tech and it has settings conrtols or buttons, then i probably already own one! my house is like a gadget museum!

i went to college at andrews university in Michigan, as well as attending DeVry University (formerly DeVRY technical institute)

I used to own my own computer store about 5 years ago or so. i learned alot about computers through that venture.

i like to dabble in perl and CGI, and i would ultimately like to end up a programmer working for a company writing programs for various things.

thats enough about me,

whos next..

Sup guys.......a little bit about myself, I currently am in college.....going for networking bachlors, I enjoy porn, whacking off and keeping my penis satisfied atleast once a day, there are theories that this technique helps prevent testicular cancer. I originaly moved from Russia when i was about 10 and want to get out of college and open up my own business if i have any $ to invest. I also enjoy music production especially hiphop/rap/R&B ...if anyone knows anyone in the record business contact me 8) .

At first I thought programming was something I wanted to do but I changed my mind after transferring colleges, so now i'm transferring to another college for the 3rd time for networking...I just can't picture myself doing this when i get out, lost all interest in this programming stuff. Networking seems to be much less aggrivating.

Some of my favorite movies: (if you haven't seen em, go rent em now!!!!)

Goodfellas
Office Space
Blow
Scarface
8 Mile
The Score
Terminator
Rocky
Casino

Some of the worst movies i've ever seen:

Jeepers Creepers (This movie was so horrible that instead of it being horror movie, it was more of a comedy, i found myself laughing throughout the whole *plum*)

Any movie Steven Siegal is in (Anyone notice how unrelastic this fag is...he never gets his ass kicked in any movie, and i was watching a documentary he runs like a little bitch ha ha)

The Dentist (This movie is horrible)

I'l post some more stuff that I think of later........

Hobbies: I like music, computers, gadgets, going to school (at first and towards the end), taking trips, and driving.

I've been using computers for around 11 years give or take a year or two. My first was a Packard Bell 386 (a what) and it probably had 8MB of ram. My first ISP was prodigy (WHO?) and I can't even remember what the internet was like back then.

I'm currently taking classes in Computer Graphics and Web Page Design. I have no idea what I want to do career wise, the idea of playing on a computer all day and getting paid good money appeals to me. I know I know... call me crazy! :D

Well the only thing I really hate is Macs and their O/S

I went from Winows 3.1 to Win95 to Win98 to WinXP. Never really used Windows ME but I have seen it and it seems to have its share of problems. Anyway I am pretty happy with XP. Still Linux rules all, and Redhat Linux at that 8)

Coming from a video/graphics world I gotta say Macs rock. Have for years. Certainly more suitable for my work 10 years ago than any other platform.
If Avid were'nt so anti-apple, I'd still be on one, or two.

Hello Everyone!

My name is Loul Payne, I'm 28 and from London, United Kingdom.

Together we go to war!!!!!!!!!!

I am a self employed, self taught computer technician and have also become involved in website and graphic design for the past year or so. I work part time for a design company and the last year has been a very succesful one financially. I have built 15 professional websites, 5 of which are e-commerce, 3 of which are my own 'business ventures' I have spent many, many hours in front of my PC which has enabled me to learn what I have so far, and so much more to learn in the future.......

My other interests are beautiful women, plenty of sex, football (or soccer for all of you in the US!) pubs, clubs and erm.....more sex!!! (I produce double the testosterone of a normal man you see!!!!)

I have a 2 year old daughter, sadly seperated from her mummy, which I blame on these machines we spend so much time on.....

That's just about me :!:

I have degrees in Liberal Arts and Computer Science. I got into computers rather late in life after I discovered that I liked using the internet for research much better than actually writing research papers.

My favorite programming language is Java and I'm planning on taking the programmer certification test soon. I also learned C, C++ and VB in school.

I use PHP with Apache and MySQL to generate the pages for my site, so I have some experience with those as well. I run the servers locally and generate the files from a script before FTPing them to the server to avoid paying the extra fee for a dynamic site (Yahoo web hosting is a bit pricey, but they divert people from my old geocities url).

For web design I use xHTML and CSS with the occasional javascript. I'm still using tables for layout but testing an all-CSS version. My site gets a lot of hits, but I haven't gotten any feedback at all from the people using it, so I'm hoping to get it reviewed here after I've contributed a bit more to the forum.

Thought I would add myself to this introduction.

I am
Male
25 Years
I work in Accounting and Finance in the Air Force
Currently stationed at Eielson AFB, Alaska
My name is Robert

My interests are Genealogy, Rifle, Pistol, and Shotgun Shooting, Hunting and all that Manly crap. I currently am working on two websites:

http://www.gravestone-archive.org
and http://www.beauparland.org

I am not into a lot of Graphical stuff, and do a lot of basic HTML for my sites, pretty much all the scripts on my sites are all borrowed or bought.

I have recently found this Forum, and hopefully I can help in some way but i sort of feel like I am out of my league here, I pretty much am using you guys as a learning source, which this place is broadening my horizons a lot.

Can't think of anything else to put here but maybe I will remember later.

How is it going? I am new to the forums and just wanted to drop a line about myself.

I am 16 years old, and into computers alot. I know HTML, PHP, SQL, some JS. I also know my way around programs from Adobe and Macromedia (photoshop, flash, dreamweaver, etc.). I look forward to participating in the threads, and sharing some of my creations.

Oh yeah and, stating the obvious, I also play around with webdesign, graphic design, and photography.

I sorta snuck in through a backdoor, but happy to have found this place. Perhaps I should have started off here, but what the heck...we all have to start off somewhere, right?

So...a belated introduction...

I'm just your average "almost" 44 year old guy who's looking for a career change. Been doing some freelance web design work for the last three years and wanting to either start my own business or get into Network admin stuff (or both). After almost 17 years of retail management, I have made a vow that I am never going back to it!

I have a fairly broad knowledge base -- not much of an expert on anything, but taught myself anything to do with web design and am very familiar with most OS's and Servers (ie. Windows based) -- need to gain a little more familiarity with Novell and Apache, etc...but getting there.

Things I believe in:
God
Knowledge is power
The only constant is change
If you don't get what you want in life, you'll have exactly what you deserve....

Hullo everyone! My name is Ally, I'm 15, and I'm from Florida. I stumbled across this site while searching for programming help. Everyone here seems to be fairly nice and I have a feeling that I can learn a lot. As of now I only know HTML and JavaScript, but I am very interested in learning Perl and PHP.
My mom is always warning me about conversing with "weirdos" online, so I just request that you not get too weird. If that's not possible (and I know that it is not for some people) I'm afraid that I'll just have to stop coming here.
Anyhoo, help with getting started out with Perl and/or PHP would be much appreciated!

Welcome to the board Geekette. Hopefully you can learn lots of information here and can contribute and help others from time to time. We would love you to stick around, as our goal have everyone learn something and help each other out :)

As far as weirdos, just do not give out any personal information ever, and if anyone bothers you on here report that person to a moderator and the problem should be resolved.

Perl and PHP is a good place to start for programming. Here is the first place I started to learn about how to use PERL, you might check it out:

http://www.cgi101.com/class/

Its good for beginners, but there are better resources if you are concerned about security of your applications.

Um, hate to be a brat, but you'll notice that Google indexed it when the page titles were "Webmaster Forums", with an "s". I tried that out for a while - got me to 7th place for "webmaster forums", and then I changed them to target both the sinple and the plural. So, when the SERPs update, I'm hoping to "put you in your place". LOL.
:P

But, sheesh, you have been busy getting a ton of inbound links. I'm impressed. You are good at this - I just wish you were targeting some other search term. Now I have to go out and get a ton of inbound links. :(

Anyway, congrats on the ranking. You zipped right past a lot of forums to get there. :D

Haha, no problem man. I never noticed you put the s on there. 2nd place is still good though, especially when im 1st (gotta taunt you while I can). Last month I wasn't even in the top ten for "webmaster forum" which really upset me, and I believe you were 1st. You are tough competition.

Competition is good though. I was getting real lazy about getting inbound links, and you went and got a ton of them!

You really do impress me - damn, first place above me, above WebmasterForum.com, and a ton of other forums. Not an easy task.

Hi guys, nice to meet you all! 8)

Some boring details about me:
Name: well.. uh.. just call me NGene..
Age: 20
Sex: female (yeah, it's pretty rare to see chicks on forums like this!)
Location: Finland (that explains my weird English. Finnish is my native language, but for obvious reasons I'm trying to survive with English somehow)

I'm a laboratory technician, but instead of getting a nice job and earning some $$$, I started studying biochemistry at the local university. Anyway, my major hobby and interest is computers, especially Linux and web design.

The way I found this forum was a bit odd. I'm a member of LinuxJunior.org, and saw a thread started by your former member, whining about getting banned and bashing this forum. I decided to take a look at the forum he was bashing, and here I am hehe...

Don't worry, I like this place and won't go around whining!

We have worked with everything from geckos to gators. More specifically we have worked with:

green tree pythons, ball pythons, amazon basin emerald tree boas, hogg island boas, madagascan tree boas, leopard geckos, bearded dragons, burmese pythons, crested geckos, jungle carpet pythons, red ackies, savanna monitors, water monitors, american alligators(oh what a chore these guys are!), and etc.

I think I missed a few, but it is hard to remember all of the different animals we have worked with. We are no longer breeding the reptiles. We have a few pets that we just couldn't bring ourselves to sell when we got out of the business.

Do you have any reptiles?

BTW, thanks for the welcome!

Welcome WindLvr! You're probably gonna want to hurt me for saying this, but when I was ten I found a gecko egg and I was amazed to find that it bounced. After that I actually tried to hatch it though, lol. I also have two dogs, a border collie and a german shorthaired pointer.

Thanks for the welcome Shrew!

I found out that gecko eggs bounced the hard way! I was carrying approximately 150 or so eggs to our refrigerator style incubator when I drop them!!! I was amazed to find none of them had broken open! I still had almost 120 of them hatch out of their eggs too. I was much more careful the next time believe me.

Wow, that must have been interesting to watch. It's pretty cool that they were still hatchable. My grandfather raises Quail, which have slightly more fragile eggs than Geckos do.(dropping them is a mess) B_heyer, I bet your sisters would be pleased to see your response.

There arn't many in Florida, but my grandfather has all sorts of ideas of how to reintroduce them to Florida. He says Quail are too stupid to live on their own down here, so he might have to cross-breed them with a smart small bird or something. Ah, sorry, kinda got into the Quail thing.

Yeah they are basically status, but also they are more of a helpful meter then status, because people can give you points if you are helpful, etc. The competitions also normally give out points as awards.

I have played Age of Empires, its okay.

I have played many of the Command and Conquers. The only one I still play is Tiberian Sun. Its definetely my favorite. You ever play that mnmarkm?

I tried Generals in the beta test but really didn't care for it. The graphics are awesome though. How do you like the game play? I really miss the Tiberian which it does not have. I wish EA never bought out Westwood Studios, because it seemed like they put more time in their products then.

Oh and welcome to the board!

Good Morning Bigwebmaster,

Thanks for the relocation.

I Have those games too. Tiberian Sun & Firestorm

I liked Renegade, but the multiplayer sucked unless you had 8 people willing to play.

As for Generals, I liked the offerings of new weapons, but I tend to agree that they dumped too much time in the redesign of it. I still enjoy the layout of the Red Alert series more.

Good morning,

I played Renegade too. I beat the single player mission and played multiplayer for awhile. I wish the graphics in the multiplayer mode was as good as what it is in the singler player mode. I haven't touched it for a long time now.

I am really looking forward to Tiberian Twilight, but am worried EA will screw it up, if it ever comes out.

Tiberian Twilight?

Just when I give up on the EA/Westwood group, somebody mentions another game and I get excited all over again.

I really enjoyed GTA3, and am looking forward to Vice City. They should create an online community like they did for other games. I just know I wouldn't be up to any good tho... lol

I'll keep my eyes peeled for Twilight.

Yeah Tiberian Twilight would follow Tiberian Sun, which had followed Tiberian Dawn.

Supposedly Tiberian Twilight will use the same graphics engine that Generals uses. I really love the graphics in Generals so I have no problems there. I am just worried that EA will not produce a quality product and make gameplay fun.

If you check the whois for the domains tiberiantwilight.com and numerous others that sound similiar you will see that EA owns them all.

My favorite C&C game is still the original. I just liked the gameplay alot. When Tiberian Sun came out I got into that for a while, but got bored. I think it was mainly because it was really slow online(I have a Nvidia TNT, bad for 3D). I also like Force Commander over Galactic battleground. It was kinda wielrd that they put both of those out on the market at about the same time. I think I'm rambling, back to subject. Welcome to the Board Mark, enjoy your stay!

Post 3+ Months Ago

Hello

My name is Johnny. I'm 33. As of this writing I'm an American living in New Zealand for the past two years. It's a beautiful country, but it's also the most isolated country in the world. This has made it difficult for me to find work in my profession (advertising design). :( I'm currently married to a really beautiful girl, but once again, because of my current situation, things are getting difficult, so I'm a bit sensitive to that subject right now.

My design background is in print. I've been hacking since I was about eleven, and once upon a time was going to code for a living, but my dad is a programmer and I figured one in the family was enough. So I took to sex, drugs, and rock and roll instead (not always in that order). I was always a big fan of the net, and designed a few things back in the "personal homepage" days, but I thought I would hold-off until it had time to evolve for a while. Besides, I was busy nightclubbin'.

I've always known that content should be seperate from style and blah blah blah from my database programming days, which I did for Citicorp putting myself through design school. All I used to see in the cubicle trenches was people reformatting data that had already been used someplace else, and to me it was a giant waste of valuable time. So when I learned about XML and PHP and mySQL, I was totally there dudes (and dudettes).

So now, with extra time on my hands, I'm devoting my career and design efforts to digital webland, playing catch-up with all the little whippers half my age. But I love it and I'm glad everybody is helpful. I like to help a lot when I can. I'm very anal when it comes to code (as most would be I suppose). I'm very very rusty so if it takes me a while to come back to it just be patient. Once I get in the zone I'm like, there.

As far as technology, gadgets, and all that other stuff people seem to like in here... well, it depends. Before I moved to New Zealand I gave away (yes, gave away) all my worldly possessions, as I don't like to define myself with material objects. I did this knowing that one day I would be certain to buy them again--a kind of upgrade plan I guess. Being without gadgets also keeps me from distraction and I actually evolve more as a person.

I love technology when it is used to enhance enjoyment of something rather than make people lazy or lethargic about life. For example, the geek child in me loves model railroading, and when I'm an old fart I'll probably take up the hobby to keep my mind from wandering. And I love the computer controlled systems that you can get now that send pulses through the track to an onboard controller to control the trains. Now I find that stuff exciting. But I still wonder why they haven't invented a programmable remote control that works with everything you own. (And I'm not talking about the cheap crap out there.) Jeesh.

As far as computing goes, I believe in "modular systems", which means I love the idea of Linux and opensource and all that fun stuff. Unfortunately, as an artist, I'm often stuck to the Mac platform, which I've grown to hate over the last five years. They've become slow and unyielding. I can appreciate the idealism that surrounds Apple, but I hate the company itself and I think Steve Jobs is a selfish bastard. In my eyes, Apple has in a lot of ways become the new "big brother" that it once promised to destroy. Oh well. There's a zen lesson in there someplace.

So there it is. Hopefully I'll be posting lots of questions and one day I'll be able to post some answers back to newbies like meself.

Ta!

(PS... I hate it when Kiwis--native New Zealanders--say "Ta." It's so Southpark Gay I can't begin to tell ya... !)

Thanks! Regarding my moniker, I am the king of contradiction. Not to open a can of worms (ahem) but I'm part of the generation that started using Apple computers (the good ol' Apple ][) and I was a Mac Evengelist for a long time. Then the "second coming" of Steve was upon us, and with it came the new dogma that would undermine a lot of the old principles that were introduced by Apple so many many years ago. I have a lot of admiration for Mr. Gates for just moving the industry forward--he has a penchant for business and understands the importance of "critical mass." I know a lot of people despise M$, but I see them as a necessary evil in the evolution of technology. If Gates didn't do it, somebody else would have. Such is the destiny of the human race.

I think out of hope and desperation I will always hold onto some form of Mac since I've been using them all my life, and therein lies my sentimental attachment to the platform. It is this luv, in fact, that allows me to face the new followers of the Mac race, look them in the eye, and tell them they are clueless wonders. The time for revolution has passed. Apple at this point is nothing more than a sanctuary for those fed up with the competition. :o

Oops, sorry. I'll get off my soapbox now...

Anyway, nice to be here... now if only I can get my PHP scripts to work...

:)

PS. Oh yeah, regarding the LOTR locations... New Zealand is one of the most beautiful countries I have ever seen. To observe nature here is like going back in time and in that regard I'm very lucky to be here. :)

Oh man, what delicious bait you've thrown me...

OS X, OS X... well, like I said, having used Macs all my life, like, all the time, I have to say that there was a time that I, as well as others, was getting a bit tired of System 7, which is really what OS 9 is with more bells and whistles. If you know about the whole Gil Amelio fiasco and the story of BeOS and all that, you'll know that Apple was in dire straights for a new OS for a long time. Using "classic" and using OS X is like night and day, however, the irony is that OS X brings the Mac community closer to its Windows cousin, without all of the evolution and "push" (critical mass) the Windows community has had over the years. What I mean is this--OS X is better than Classic in terms of stability and "software power", but primarily we also have given up speed (due to an OS on proprietary hardware--only after waiting x years we have the G5 which is apparently not as fast as Apple claims it to be) as well as the user-interface enhancements that Apple was famous for, including little things like non-dependancy of file extensions, and big things like human-interface guidelines, which Apple now breaks all the time (the dock is a great example of poor interface design).

Although I prefer OS X over Classic (in most regards, but not all), I would still prefer to use XP if it meant a better performing machine when using cross-platform applications. For example, the [speed] performance of applications on OS X is less than acceptable--I am not the only one in this boat with regards to speed performance issues, and even with the G5 now available, it still seems easier to make my next machine a dual AMD config with XP rather than go through all the hassles of waiting for the UI to respond to my actions in OS X, or wishing that OS X was faster in general. (I may reserve the right to stick to Mac. The jury is still out.)

The good points of OS X--well I dig the whole Apache thing built in. I like having access to a lot of Unix-based applications for free. That's a definate selling point. For sitting down and doing light, relaxing computing, I don't mind OS X at all. It's just when I'm really on a tight deadline or trying to do the power moves I could do in Classic without waiting for the damn beach ball to stop spinning I get really pissed at it. I know I'm not alone in this regard.

To sum up, I feel OS X is better than the Classic alternative for Mac lovers, but it's still not up to spec when comparing the features and speed performance of XP. So for now I deal with it.

(I hope this makes sense... I'm about to crash hard so I'm a bit wonky in the head.)

No, it made lots of sense. Thank you for making such a lenghy reply to my question. There are also some things I prefer Macs for and some things I prefer Windows for. For one thing, I am an avid gamer, so that really hurts me if I go with a Mac. But for Mac's, I like to use their video editing software, I find it easier to use than the Windows Video Editing Software currently available. Eh, I 'm tired too.

Ah, yeah, video editing... I have to say that I prefer that on the Mac at this point as well, although I've only done a little bit here and there. I think this is where I always get frustrated with computers, because there's never really a simple solution. I can't remember where but a while back I was reading an article by this Linux guru who was talking about the concept of scaling applications with computers--that is, sometimes it's better to have a computer do only one thing, rather than have one computer try to do many things. I always thought Linux would be able to achieve this sort of modular computing concept, but it doesn't have enough push behind it to make it successful. I think when the world is broadband we will see a paradigm shift in personal computing--my dream is that one day we will be free from the "chair" and computers will become more of an integral part of our living solution rather than a box on the desktop.

See what you've done? I can't stop talking about this crap...

Now I'm REALLY gonna crash...

elo elo!

You might want to consider puting a box over the letters in the last frame of the buttons (normal, over, click, [this one]). I don't remember what it is caleld, but it acts as the hotspot for your button, and since right now you just have the button the letters are very hard to click on. looks good tho!

Hello guys!

I'm the owner of http://www.webmaster-resources101.com/ which I switched with my old domain name http://www.webwondersnews.com/ because Web Wonders News didn't really tell what the site was about...

I write PHP scripts which I have been doing for about a year and have already written tonnes of scripts in that time :D

I am wanting to learn Java but at the moment I'm really focusing on PHP.

Anyway, hope to see you around!

not that anyone will prob read this.. Oh well here it goes..

age: 20
location: Fort Worth, TX area..
Real Name: Aaron Wouldntyouliketoknow

I am basicly way in over my head with you peeps.. I mean I know a lil about this stuff but geez not even close to what you guys do.. Gadget Guru gadgets are pretty damn cool.. I am a hands on person.. I like messing with stuff.. I have ALWAYS been fasinated with robotics and AI.... I am a pretty simpler person with A.D.D. so i am pretty sure I could never do what you guys do... I have recently been getting into choreography lately and been practicing some moves.. Truth is I have NO DAMN CLUE WHAT I WANT TO DO WITH MY LIFE!!! I have takin some college on Medical but its not really something I want to do..
I started posting here because I found a post on yahoo and was kinda drawn into it.. I had no idea what kinda forum it was till after I joined.. I am one when it comes to following where my heart takes me.. *hints the name Heart*.. I don't know.. Just alive but not living..

Don't worry Heart...the people that want to read it will.

The world of computers (programming Web dedign, etc) can be fun. You at least seem to be fluent with computers. It might be a direction you want to consider. I haven't been doing it as long as others, but at my age (44) after many years of retail management, I much prefer it over having disgruntled customers scream at me half the day.

If I could make one recomendation on "What you want to do with your life" I would suggest NOT to make it retail management.

well here is the prob.. I am very fluant with computers.. In fact I am NEVER not on the computer.. I live on the computer.. What sucks is that I dont have the knowledge of computers that I should by now.. I mean seriously! My mouse has been clicked more times than seconds I have been alive.... I mean being into a programmer or designer would be awsome but it is just too much for me to take in.. Espacially trying to learn online while people type out your instructions...

It's easier than you think. I'm not an expert at design (yet)...but I have learned almost everything I know about design "online". And it was mostly "not" from forums. I just enjoy tech forums like this because I do like to help people and do get some education from them.

Bigwebmaster did a much better job with this place than I did with my own. I had an extremely similar concept...but with less resources. Mine didn't fly. His did. I'm glad to be a part of it.

You should b_heyer. If I knew what I know now then, and know what you appear to, I'd be rich by now.

Goals and dreams ARE important. If you can get your hands on a few tapes of Lou Holtz seminars...watch them...it will change your thinking if not your life.

(PS...if you don't know who Lou Holtz is...you should do some reading on his life.)

Hi.

I'm Melinda. I make web apges...although not professionally. I have yet to trick someone into actually paying me, but just you wait! I'm 21 and most sit around being a student so I can get on my father's insurance. I twiddle with web pages a bit, mostly just my personal site <a href="http://www.neogoddess.com" target="_blank">Wheee</a>

I'm a lazy person, so I mostly use dreamweaver. Although I’m trying to break that habit and learn a little css and try to do my web pages the old fashion way...actually working on them. Woo, I can like change my font color, that's about it so far.

Hey melinda! great website and may I say Insane Art!!!! I really like it. I am yet to get to the point of being able to use photoshop to do all those cool things. I really like that style. I guess once I learn how to blend layers and stuff in so they dont just look pasted then I will be able to !

Anyhoo its all a learning process. I've never done a class on webpage making and people pay me to make em and ive had no complaints! so you will be able to no problem!

Welcome to Ozzu, Melinda! Your site is quite lovely, I do wish that I had that sort of artistic talent! The old fashioned way of creating webpages is very pleasing and I haven't actually done it any other way (but maybe if I tried my pages would actually look better...). Ah well, I hope that you enjoy it here, it's a great place to learn and have fun!

Thank you musik, I’m rather proud of my art as well. Although you have to realize %70 of it was pretty much created by accident. Like the zombie girl…pure twiddling about. While on the other hand I’ll spend week trying to make something and it’ll only end up in the rejected part of my hard drive. (My graveyard of images is three times bigger then the ones I like) So keep trying with photoshop, maybe you’ll make a mistake and it’ll come out rather pretty looking. And you’ve actually gotten people to give you money? I try, but most people either want something I can’t do, or they want me to do something and pay me nothing = ).

And thank you as well, Geekette. I used to do my web pages by hand, but once I got dreamweaver it’s so hard to go back. With dreamweaver I can focus on making my site look pretty, rather then screaming at the tables to do what I want them to do. The only problem is that I’m not all that flexable outside dreamweaver. That’s actually why I joined, to try and expand my web skills.

Bigwebmaster wrote:

These extra two-tenths of a point had to have been attained from honors or AP courses. An honors course gives you something like .04 for Honors and then .08 for AP (I forget exactly what it is, and probably varies between schools). Thus it is actually possible to graduate with a 5.0! I've heard that some colleges don't really count the weighted GPA, though. :-/

Good luck getting into Notre Dame, Nego!

That is odd. When I was in highschool and took honors courses or college courses, we never got that boost in GPA. Have they just started this recently? Or maybe my school just didn't do it.

i've heard of the GPA boosting, but from what I understand the overage
of .2 is virtual and not real. hope that makes sense. It's a caluculated
inflation, just for show.

thats sounds so true...don't know tho, It makes sense though because if someone works their ass off taking honors courses, they should get some credit, compared to people who take all easy courses and pull a 4.0

I guess I've been on the board about a week and never bothered to introduce myself.

I've been into website design for 4 years now I think. I'm 19, and am currently inbetween semesters attending the University of Utah going into Computer Science. My main goal isn't that of website design, but really computer programming. Website design has just been a fun hobby off to the side, which is why I'm really into PHP programming with SQL database work.

I'm heavy into the hacker scene... no, not the one your thinking. I regularly attend 2600 meetings at our local active 2600 group at http://www.2600slc.org . And a regular at our new DC801 meetings (DefCon Group Meetings). I'm not just an attendee at the anual DefCon Conventions http://www.defcon.org , but I also help run a couple of the events down there. I have a couple bigger side projects I'm not completely active in right now, but they're ongoing projects. Both StormBot http://www.stormsource.org , and TIMap http://www.sf.net/projects/timap/ .

My interests really leaned towards website design with the first of my work being on our High School website http://www.rhs.jordan.k12.ut.us , where I got my first taste of PHP programming, and helping physically run the webserver.

I have a bit of experience with color matching and I know my color wheel, which makes for good designs as far as color scheme which is almost the first thing I look at. I'm currently getting myself more familiar with CSS, and I preferably stay away from javascript.

I'm am in a partnership in a full registered LLC company Enigma Design - http://www.enigmadesign.net . The company was started up after High School with all 4 partners barely being of legal age to be in the partnership =). It's currently still running strong with a number of clients, and brings in some cash on the side while we're all still going to college and working on other things.

Hello OZZU dudes :)

Name: Skuff
Age : 30
Location : New Brighton, Merseyside, UK
Occupation : Apparently I'm the person responsible for teaching the elderly populace of New Brighton how to operate a mouse.
Hobbies: Finding new and interesting ways to avoid teaching the elderly populace of New Brighton how to operate mice (or it that mouses?)

I came here looking for some help with submitting forms on my online junk shop of a website and then I noticed there was a digital image/photography section on the forum which is something I've just begun to get into so I think I may stay a while.

You poor man, my grandmother came over once and saw me twiddling with a web page, and asked me what I was doing. She had no idea what the Internet was, or how to use the computer, BUT really wanted to know about my stuff. So I’d explain it the best I could, and her eyes would glaze over, and I'd have to start all over again because she was persistent.

I couldn't even think of what it would be like teaching a class of students that never used a computer until they were retired. I already go insane trying to get my mom to change her resoultion on her computer.

Me:"Now Right click"
Her:"wha?

My black lab lives to fetch. She always wants to play with the ball and will seriously fetch until she is crawling to get it because she is so exhausted. She never knows when to stop. She is kind of trained though, but stubborn. When she fetches the ball she brings it back and sits and gives me the ball waiting until I throw it again. Now my great dane is probably the worst fetcher out of any dog species that exist. When she gets the ball she runs away with it and you have to chase her sometimes. And when you do convince her to bring it back to you, she walks super super slow on purpose (and usually not in a direct line to you). She is always really clumsy compared to my black lab. The black lab can catch the ball in the air or catch the ball when it bounces off the wall with precision. She is very good at fetching. The great dane will often have the ball bounce off her head, or she will totally lose where it goes. Sometimes she will get confused and search the entire yard for it because she is clueless. It is funny though, I cannot help but laugh. The great dane is very sensitive emotionally though, compared to the black lab, so we give her alot of love and encourage her.

Hi there

Just joined today. My name is Peter and am a hardcore Swish user :D (yep, Swish and swishmax, sorry Flash MX guys, nothing personal ;) ) apart from regular html and all.

Anyways, I'm into webdesign and music. Hope I can contribute something to this place.

Welcome Peter. I use Swish more than Flash MX too, but really only because I do not have the time right now to get into Flash MX. It does fine for me though :)

What is Swishmax by the way? an addon to Swish?

welcome to ozzu. :D (said that in your site review as well ;))

no offense taken that you prefer swish. according to your site, it's
used quite well. I applaud you for that, because most swish creations
are "canned" and typical. Yours is nicely done. :)

glad you found your way here, and hope you stick around.

What is Swishmax?

First of all, no, definately not just an addon ;)

Swishmax is the next big evolution of Swish 2.

It still has all the functionality of Swish 2, but you can script now :D

Yes, scripting. It is like a subset of actionscript and is called Swishscript.

If you want I can fully describe it in a new thread, but in which forum should I do that?
I mean, lots and lots of possibilities, api, dynamic input fields, things like looplabs, in fact, everything Flash can, Swishmax can do as well.

Just give me a clue as to where to post it and I'll make a full description of it :)

hey all...I've been a webmaster for about 2 years now. I'm completely self taught and I have to say that im pretty confident in my dreamweaver and fireworks skills :). I've got a few websites that I run.

http://www.draztikbeatz.net - This one is a hiphop site for the utah area. I'm using the envolution CMS here.
http://www.supabiz.com - This one is in the proccess of being created still, but it is going to be a community site for people interested in online business. Envolution also.
http://www.ebaysolutions.com - Here I am selling a package of ebooks
http://www.free-to-sell-e-books.com - This site is not very impressive at all. I just threw it up in hopes to sell some ebooks. I have plans of redoing it.

This message board is good news for me. I've noticed alot of people on here know what they're talking about. Its good to be here!

Hi all,
Webdeveloper Sydney Australia.
hmmm, da clients think 'cause they dont' know what you are doing, that you must.
And occasionally, lo, it is so. On other occasions, sadly...
but thats y i hang out in these places 'cause there is always someone who’s just done it.
And that lucky person is going to tell me how it's done with all the little steps and not missing a thing cause they don’t have anything else to do, right?
hmmm,,,
Gadgets, yeah I love ‘em 2
What I love is automation. Ever since I was a kid if you can press a button over here and something happens over there, love it!
I love gauges. *plum* I don’t know why but if there is a needle moving back and 4th I like. So I love recording in the studio tho there is more to it than that ( I think).
If someone else wrote this I would think they are bent.
Hmmm… keeps me sane.
Stay cool dudes

Hi all.

First & foremost English is *not* my native tongue. Bad, twisted english ahead.(1)

My name is Philippe, but ever since Multiplayer doom the world knows me as "xaccrocheur" (it comes from a short story from Robert Sheckley)

I'm in Paris France where I lived most of my life. I was 36 last time I checked, I got a wonderful 14 ys old daughter who's right now only speaking to me via Bluetooth IM, no kidding, you got to watch the geekiness level of kids.

I'm a web developer whenever I feel the urge to work, not so much for the money but because after 2 months I become a lazy moron watching TV and taking drugs all day long. I'm a writer too, but strangely, I cannot write anything worth reading if I'm doing JUST that. I need a day job to be readable, and that makes sense. when you think of it.

I totally failed at school, to the point where I ended up finishing my school cycle in a psychiatric hospital ! (No kidding. BTW, great fun there)*
Then I escaped from my home at 16 to live in a government-managed "young workers house" where, well advised by ppl concerned about me, I decided to learn photography, right before the Amiga 1000 was out, remember ?
Those ppl and this machine saved my bacon. I mean, I was not in death danger, just in a crappy situation where no one, specially ME, knew what I wanted & needed.

Then from 20 to 30 I did virtually NOTHING but crappy punk-rock songs (a shoebox of greasy tapes, great fun too here) and take drugs.

And play SpeedBall with my friends on my Amigas.
This is when I became heterosexual, that is, before that I was really wondering...
At that time, one of my best friend died in a motorcycle crash, leaving the hospital where his wife just gave birth to a little girl. I then adopted the girl, she needed a father like a PC needs Linux, and got caught in a swirl of dipers, baby food, smiles, kid music, and well, I loved it. Now she got Doc Marteens shoes the size of BMW tires. She is beautiful, some would say hot, but not when I'm around ;)
Boy, was it FAST.

In 1995 I wrote a FTP client for the Mac 68k and asked my banker money to create a design and coding agency.

I put together ZDNet France in 98, closed the company (it was threatening of becoming dangerousely huge & succesful) and I'm still living on the money :)

Now I'm doing a website for a BIG (challenging the US leader;)) french supply chain Co whose mammoth killer application they sell I wrote the JAVA (swing JFC) module for.

I mean the chief of information is a guy I knew at catholic school when 10 ! He took me in pity 5, 6 months ago when he saw me lying on the living room sofa w/ a beer barking at the TV :)
He helped me with JAVA that we basically learned along together, him being a C++ guru it was a real walk thru the park. I mean I knew nearly nothing about JAVA @ that time, and was slowly loosing my landmarks in web design...
I will do this big website and then by that time, the album will be out.

I'm also recording a... Record with an OLD friend of mine who was playing bass in my bands, then worked overtime on umpteen albums as a sound engineer, and is now into dance music, house, funk, I mean seriously, with like 2000 waxes in his basement/studio, focused on 70-85, last time I discovered ESG, you know the 4 girls from Bronx NYC ? Wow. On our Tannoy speakers, it pumps you to heaven, and this thing is 20 years old !
I play the guitars, and sing. He does ALL the rest, including very fine pattern programming. It looks and sounds like nothing.
This is cool.

I just installed my new <a href="palmone.com/us/products/handhelds/tungsten-t3/">T|3</a> under Mandrake 9.1 and well, it makes my day.

As for my expectations, I do NOT want to be rich, heavens no, my family is, believe me, it's a nitemare.
No, instead, I want to be happy. I'll focus on that and surely earn a living in doing so, w/o even thinking of it.

I'd like to say one last thing, so then we can get going (I subbed here because I wanted to share CODE, not social *plum*, don't worry) you seem to be mostly Americans (I know you guys put Uppercases everywheren here we write France but french, so much 4 the grammar) and from what I read, see and hear, there seem to be a lot of misunderstanding in between us countries.

But at the end of the day, we really are in the same boat, even if it sounds cheesy to say that. We here were TERRIFIED by the WTC thing, and not only that.
We know you for a long time, guys.
We grew up with Happy days, listening to Led Zeppelin & Public Enemy.
We tripped in your marvelous Detroit cars, and generally used you great metal gear you make, when you made things (mid-eastern quality just don't cut it) and still, believe me, when it comes to design, build and market something, you guys rule.
For years we had, to know you, only what mainstream media wanted us to see and hear. But now, with the internet, we have everything, from KKK to Michael Moore, and that is just what we suspected : We really are NOT that far away.
We could learn A LOT from each other, you better believe it.
This is why I'm here, BTW.

I realize this blurb about me turned out to be... This is my day off, and I did not write like that for days !
How do you say "totally out of place" in a funny way ?
Sorry about that waste of space, ozzers.

Now enough of that crap, let's talk CODE :)

pX

(1) when I do a big, structural english mistake, I like to be corrected.
Please feel free to msg me about some idiocy that I said, this is how you learn.
Oh, and I DID use the SpellCheck function, witch BTW I find amazing, a personal first on a forum, bravo !

Well there isn't much to say about me that is at all interesting, I hate typing these things because all it does is just remind me of how boring I really am. So anyway, I grew up here in the dreaded Philadelphia, PA where I still reside. I didn't recieve my first computer until I was almost 16 years old. I adapted well to it though, and ended up building a newer and better computer within a year. I then got into computer networking and got pretty good at that, I was the first to pass all 4 semesters of the Cisco Networking Program at my high school (took me 2 full school years, which isn't bad because it was quite a bit shorter than the alotted time set forth by Cisco), so that's something to be proud of I guess.

But then I realized networking was not something I really wanted to be doing so I dove further into web programming and graphic design. So basically I started off learning HTML, whizzed through that and got into CSS and Javascript. I consider myself proficient in HTML and CSS (easy enough), and I am good at Javascript, but I am still learning a lot in it. Right now I am currently learning PHP/mySQL, which is proving to be interesting.

I also program in Actionscript (Macromedia Flash), and if you ask me, that is probably the language I program best in, which is kinda sad since I lack the ability to code anything actually useful, just quirky little effects. Kinda funny though, since I bought Flash thinking I would be a super cool animator, well I can't animate for diddle in it...hehe.

I dabble here and there in Java, but haven't done anything useful there either. I want to get more into C++ and C# hopefully in the future.

Alright, that takes care of web programming (and other programming) stuff, now about graphic design. I got a great deal on Photoshop from my sisters ex-boyfriend (who at the time worked at a computer store, and is where I got Flash and Dreamweaver from) I couldn't resist because I heard good things. I started dabbling in it, creating the usual filter-holic tacky nasty designs and passing them off as super cool like almost everyone new to graphic design likes to do. I like to think I have gotten better since then, I just take Unflux's word for it that I have.

I think that is about it for me.... boring right? heh.

I updated my mini bio with a picture of myself for some reason I don't know :P

Sirgamesalot: Clever name... hehe. Welcome to the forum.

Vegeta9870: I recommend getting a firm handle on HTML before jumping into something server-side like PHP. Learn the client-side before you go server-side. But then again, everyone has their own process to learn. Welcome to the forum.

Adia - Is it common to finish college at the age 19 over in Malaysia? or are you way ahead of everyone else? I think that is great that you are already graduated. I didn't finish college until I was 23.

Anyway nice to meet you two :)

Thanks, BigWebmaster. :)

It is not usual actually...heheh...
I did not take Senior High School, so after I finished my Junior High School, I took the College. At that time, there were about 20 students the same age as me around 15 years old. We took the tests and who pass the tests will take a program called as Pre Diploma for 1 year, and then take Diploma for 1 year and Degree for 2 years and 4 months. :D

Anyway, nice to meet you BigWebmaster and also everyone else...hehehhe...

If you look back for the previous post, you will find there are another 3 persons who are younger than you, I could only remember kylebacc who is only 14 years old. ;)

Making a forum like this using phpBB2 is simple. You just need to make sure your host supports php and mySQL. After that it's up to what you do with it. Just follow instructions.

Ah that sounds very simple.

But, i know it already..'my @home account does'nt support phpbb2 or php.

But thanks.. 'cause when my own website is finished.. I buy a .nl or a .com adress and that does support php :D

Hello Matt! Welcome. I thought the "Apostle of God" was Paul a.k.a Saul. (but Matthew, i.e. Matt is good, too). No big deal. I started college as a music ed major with a percussion minor, but thought better of it after my first semester and realized I didn't want to teach band for the rest of my life. (Don't let that distract you from your thoughts -- just the way I felt about it at the time).

Dear People,

Hello Fellow webmaster Friends! Just wanted to say hello to everyone as I just signed up to this forum. Recently I just started my own web designer forum and I hope develop it into a successful community. I came here to learn a lot from the people on this forum and hope to make some new friends while I am at it.

I was wondering if anyone could give me some ideas on developing my own forum, or if anyone is interested in helping me. Aside from that my main focus here is to learn a lot from everyone and make some new friends.

Warmest Regards,
Marcus

Yeah, it's generally cool !

Only some things leave me lightly wondering, like I innocently asked about any real-time resources (IRC, IM) in the general discussion board, and got a reaction very much similar to what I'd imagine to receive if I had posted something highly controversial, say a personal comment on a big IT company, (any of 'em) oh well.

http://www.ozzu.com/viewtopic.php?p=19416#19416

Not that I care that much. Fact is, I don't give a cat's biscuit (fish ones : beahh) but I just don't see the point of locking THAT subject, when OK, discussing the matter over & over IS NOT very useful, but then again, a lot of topics should be considered like that...

Now I'm barely daring to ask where I can meet you guys on IRC when I feel like ? I mean this is not close to Ozzu, when I'm working I would never start a IRC session (let alone IM : this is just HELL, I hate those) unless it's required in the job, whereas it can reveal itself a precious collaborative tool, BTW. Talk about a BIG time-eater anyway.

So. When I'm home, hacking my server and gerally breaking my personal website, I like to chat a little, and that can as well turn into a code-sharing session with others (ozzers?) webmasters, that's why I'm asking. It's really a *detail*.

In Paris, today, weather is to die for.
You wake up, go to the window, look outside, and then kill yourself ;)

Seriously, if the weather is *plum* wherever you are guys, console yourself by thinking : There is ONE place where it's worse. Hell, it's not even *really* cold. This half-year of *plum* is what will make me LEAVE this (part of, at least) country, one day, not far away.

I salute all of you

pX

PS - spellcheck completed !

I finally read this post. Probably seemed like forever, but I do use ICQ vs IRC. ICQ connect=280064986

Don't take too much offence to the locking of your subject. If you read closely enough (and I saw that you had) it may be because all but a couple of us are new mods and still attempting to learn. So bare with us.

Hey people. I've been invited to sick around with you guys by 'UNFLUX', nice guy that he is (Guessing ur guy dude, not meaning to offend u if u ain't!).

I'm an ICT Tech/Administrator for a company based in England. I dabble in all that technical including most web based and communication stuff. I work a lot in Dreamweaver 4! Yeah... And just punch away at the keys mostly. I'm 20 and just about still have my sight  , being a bit of a code cutter.
I play around with crude JavaScript to make my sites a little more interesting and more recently perl, although I'm currently fighting with a windows 2003 server, which doesn't 'sprechen die lange'

This seems to be a kewl forum, looking forward to collaborating with you guys.

I was told that this was the place to come to for the best advice, so here I am. I can not wait to start collaborating with all of you.

Here we go, I'm a telecommunication tech in the Chicagoland area that has been interested in computers for a long time. I'm not the best hand but I can get around I guess. I joined in the hopes that some one out there might be able to help me with my 2003 ENT. server. I have it and well have never ran a windows server before. I have played with Linux and well not very good at that as well. Gotta try somewhere right.

Here goes, this is the first forum I've ever signed up for. You have a very interesting site with a lot of good info. I'm over 40, just graduated with my second masters (MBA and Computer Info Mgmt)...ya I like school...late bloomer. Been out of work for the past 2 years, then decided to take all the book knowledge and put it to good use. I started a business, Homemaker/Companion Agency in Florida (geared toward seniors) it's just starting to take off. Somehow I got sidetracked into redesigning a website for a non-profit organization, which lead to another....

My problem is with an iframe. I've redesigned a site for a couple of optomologists everything's fine except, their hosting company (Eyehub) has this canned program, Eyecyclopedia, which they offer their clients. They won't let me link to their database. They want me to put a link to the doctor's old page (YUK!) So I decided to use an iframe and import the page. This works fine, except I get the whole page.

Now, the question. Does anyone know of a way to get the linked page (which is viewed in the iframe) to open right justified. This would hide the old page header and button menu.

If you want to take a look at what I mean - (http://www.attheheart.com/losgatos/cyclopedia.asp)

I hope this makes sense, it's 2:30 am I've been working this since 8am this morning.

Over the years I've created a couple of websites - the hard way. Instead of seeking out great webmaster resources like this one, I 'brute forced' my way through design, development, marketing, credit-card processing, etc. I was more interested in independence and doing it 'my way' than being efficient.

So now I'm going backwards and seeing what I missed out on. There is still so much to learn and apply to my sites. I still need to get a better handle on marketing and sales. It seems I wear the techie hat a little too long - tweaking and perfecting each pixel and prompt. I know I need to just promote my sites.

Perhaps one advantage is that I can now offer advice from my years of 'brute force' experience. It will probably be more akin to how not to develop a site than what you should do.

If you are interested, my first site was http://www.RealAdventures.com and my latest creation is http://www.AtlasWebTools.com.

Look forward to learning, sharing and helping others.

Glad to have you with us. Sometimes learning is best done "your own way". I occasionally refuse to help someone with something when I know they can easily write a script themselves.

Hope you stick around!!!

Soon to start a new position with Sony Electronics. Got my first computer in 1997 and have yet to get sick of the internet. Picking up on learning HTML (raw) while nursing a broken wrist. Promised I would do something constructive since I can't play softball for awhile, so I am learning HTML to write my own blog. Was studying for some certs as I am doing a career change, but the arm in a cast got the best of my as far as school so I am stuck with test king and other study guides. Might need some help with questions, so I know where to find you HTML freaks.

Happy you found us! Hope your wrist gets better! If you are looking to write a blog, you'll need more then HTML. I would suggest PHP and mySQL after you learn HTML.

I take that back, you could create your blog with just HTML, but people wouldn't be able to comment, and it would be harder to update. Look forward to helping you out when you need it thouhg!

My names Dale and I'm in the UK just a bit north of London.

I work for a construction company in the off site manufacture area as the network administrator (Full Time).

I got in to web development about 12 months ago with a friend. Together we put together a raw HTML site
http://www.whosonthedex.8m.com.

In the last 3 months we've moved domain names and re branded the site http://www.playtunes.co.uk

I DJ in my spare time with the majority of people involved with 2nd website.

Hopefully some of my experiance in other areas of Computing will help some of you in the future. Any Microsoft problems then i'm your man.

G'day from downunder!

Name: Dave

Age: 52 (that is not a misprint!)

Location: Scotts Head, NSW Australia

Interests: websiite stuff (obviously), soccer.

I only came across this Forum the other day, wish I'd found it sooner.
From what I have seen so far, I am very impressed - it looks a top spot for gaining & learning new info.

I am what you would class as a 'newbie', only learnt about making websites approx 1 year ago. I created & maintain a website for our local soccer association (http://www.hcsoccer.com.au) Perhaps I should put it up for review, then again I will probably get told how many errors I have made!
I am in the process of 'revamping' it for next season, perhaps I will get you guys to review it when finished.

Thats enough from me, onto the next one............

Great forum! Just joined :D

Name: Greg
Age: 36
Location: San Marcos, CA, USA

Interests: Open source content management software and search engine marketing strategies.

I have been designing web sites for 7 years. I hand code HTML templates and cut graphic for Nuke variants and the TYPO3 CMS which mediatech.net is built on. I'm currently obsessed with learning TYPO3... it's very powerful.

I have been using my skills to market non tech markets after realizing how little I was getting paid as a web designer and consultant. I'm more interested in building sites for myself that generate search engine traffic these days. My target market is the vacation and spa resort market. The plan is to generate Internet booking this spring.

Name: Jeroen De Ridder
Location: Belgium, Ghent
Age: 15
Interests: ActionScripting, PHP, SQL, Math, Web Development, MultiMedia, Computer Hardware, Karate, ...

As said above, I'm a 15-year old ActionScripter living in Belgium. I still go to school, which brings me to my interest in Math. I've always liked Math, and I'm quite good at it. I apply Math when ActionScripting, making my interest even higher.

I enjoy ActionScripting a lot, and it is what I mostly do in my free time. I spend more time behind my computer than a 15-year old should. I am extremely addicted to ActionScript. I don't think I could spend a week without visiting a Flash forum or Actionscripting. I also practice karate in my free time.

I also have a lot of interest in computer hardware, operating systems, multimedia, other scripting languages and web development in general.

Hello Everyone,

I'm Bompa and I just joined this forum.

I'm from Massachusetts, usa. I enrolled in The School of Hard Knocks this past June when I started my first, (commercial), web site.

I spend hours everyday aimlessly surfing the web and prayerfully trying to improve my site's conversion ratio and SERP.

I am currently single and looking forward to retiring, (yah, I'm old), in the Philippines in a few years where I shall have my pick of ladies, Muhahaha!

later,

Hey all, I'm the new guy ;)

Anyway, heres some basic info about me:

Name: Mike
Age: 21
Job: Computer Programmer (USAF)

I'm just getting started with webpage stuff. I done a lot in the past, mostly small pages for gaming clans and such. But now I'd like to get a little more into making things look pretty and such ;)

Right now I'm currently working on just a blog (i guess thats what its called) page with random stuff I put up. I hope to make it fairly entertaining. All I have currently is the basic menus and layout.

Hopefully I can learn a lot from you guys, I've browsed through the website reviews board, wow...talk about a blow to my confidence =P There are some really great pages, makes mine look plain.

But hey, thats why I'm here to learn! 8)

Yay a network-a-holic! ;) We really need someone who is knowledgable with that stuff. Most of us have a very good idea, but I am not sure if anyone is a guru at it.

got my own web design company - got myself a business partner who was in hosting.
he got us our second dedicated server and now I find out he knows less than I do - the first server was basically set up for him.

so now I'm in the deep end trying to find out stuff fast :P

wish me luck
