This is probably the coolest software application I have seen on the iPhone so far. This program called Shazam can identify almost any song by simply listening to it for around 10 seconds. I just tested it out by playing a song and I started up Shazam and put the iPhone next to the speaker. It was able to identify the name of the song who sings it, genre, label, and album. It also provide links immediately to preview it on itunes and also see anything related to it on youtube. I don't know how many times I have heard a song on the radio that I wish I knew the name of so I could get it. Now anytime this happens I just start Shazam up and it will let me know whats playing. You can find out more info here:

Already an industry standard, Shazam fully integrates with and complements the iPhone's native environment, allowing you to seamlessly discover, buy and share tunes simply by holding your iPhone to music for just a few seconds.

Aw, that is pretty neat. Makes me want to buy an iPhone just so i can find out what the name of songs are when they play on the radio.

Wow that's really cool.

I wonder how they're doing the lookups. :scratchhead:

I've heard of shazam years ago, waaay before iphone came out. I think there was a shazam phone service in the uk, where you could dial a number, play some music to it, and it would tell you the name of the song/ performer etc....

does sound like a brill tool - I've got loads of songs that I really like but don't know any details on........

No way it's that easy.

The tracks have to be getting boiled down to some sort of basic rythem to account for differences in players/speakers/etc, I'm guessing it's something similar to morse code by the time they actually start with lookups.

I really don't know, but I would certainly like to. :D

I know, just kidding around, and yes, it'd be really cool to know how it's actually done, and so accurately with all rave songs sounding very very similar ...

Definitely a cool app. I've used it a couple of times and it seems to get the song pretty quickly and with decent distance from the sound source. Plus it being free is a pretty big win.
