I still don't understand this participation points things. I have read the thread in the Announcements section that explains what they are, but I still don't get what they are used for.

THey are for Games. On the home page there is a Online Activities link. Games are 25 Part. points each.

the actual point of them is just a remedial incentive to get you to post
and award them to people who have helped you out. It's really just for
fun and to see how well we all do on the board.

The games were added much later and are not intended to be the only
use of the points.
