Mars rover is sick, but not dead
Spirit 'talks' with NASA, seems stuck in a computer loop

(there's a really cool pic of the landing zone -- link below)

PASADENA, Calif. - NASA received data from the Spirit rover Friday
morning for the first time in two days, easing scientists’ anxiety that the
Mars mission had come to a calamitous halt. But mission team members
said Spirit would not be functional for at least several more days.

The six-wheeled rover communicated for 10 minutes at about 4:30 a.m.
PT (7:30 a.m. ET) and transmitted “limited data” for 20 minutes about an
hour later, officials said in statements early Friday. Officials said Friday’s
signals were received by NASA’s Deep Space Network antenna complex
near Madrid, Spain.

“The spacecraft sent limited data in a proper response to a ground
command,” said Pete Theisinger, rover project manager at NASA’s Jet
Propulsion Laboratory.

Later in the day, Theisinger told reporters that the rover has apparently
been stuck in a "processor reset loop" since Wednesday: Spirit would
restart its onboard software, detect a software problem, wait for about
an hour, then reset itself again.

I am glad they regained contact, too bad it will take them up to 3 weeks to get it fully operational. Don't we only have like 90 days to operate the bot before it dies?

I think they tend to be very conservative with those estimates. If I recall correctly, Pathfinder went for 3x longer than the original estimate of one month. Anyway, I'm glad they're getting it sorted out. Hopefully, they can avoid whatever caused the problem when Opportunity gets going, so they won't lose any time there.

yeah, well if the US decides to go to mars (with people that that want back) there going to need to use the moon as a jump off point (less fuel to get stuff into orbit) maybe they will want so of your land, but you own it, so they would have to buy it... not that you wouls be able to cheack to see if they are using it...
oh well, and the cummute wouldn't be to bad if you find a McJupiter to work at :D

Do you have a link to an article on that? I haven't seen it on any of the major news sites and I'd think that it'd be pretty big news... :-/

Latest News From Mars: A Frozen Ocean!!

New scientific discovery may be an important factor for Imagine Mars Project participants to consider as they engage in the project and plan their community.

Recently, instruments aboard the Mars Odyssey spacecraft have detected substantial amounts of hydrogen just under the surface of the planet Mars, according to mission scientists.

They say they believe the hydrogen is most likely in the form of water ice.

Researchers announced preliminary findings from Mars Odyssey in March, when early data from an instrument called the gamma ray spectrometer showed evidence of vast deposits of hydrogen in Mars' southern hemisphere.

Experts say the confirmation of ice on Mars could answer a question that's nagged them for years: Despite the fact that the surface of Mars now appears dry as bone, much physical evidence -- including channels on the landscape -- suggests that water once flowed there.

Researchers have long been puzzled about where the water went. Now, the new findings suggest that it could have gone underground.

NASA Says Second Mars Rover Experiencing Problems

JPL controllers say they are proceeding cautiously with Opportunity in hopes of avoiding a repeat of the difficulties that have left Spirit crippled since last week.

Mission manager Jennifer Trosper said engineers are exploring several scenarios for what may have caused problems with Spirit's onboard computer memory, including an overload from the buildup of data files during the spacecraft's eight-month voyage to Mars.

Another possibility is a burst of charged particles from a solar flare that could have bombarded the rover at a vulnerable point during its communications with Earth.

Project managers have said they hope to understand and overcome their problems with Spirit and return the rover to service in the next few weeks.

on march 19th 1999 they found Fossilized Bacteria in Ancient Meteorite From Mars<~~ is all i could find on the bacteria subject.i would love to see newer link ,im also following the mars missions...

Thanks for the info, twiztit_momma.

Myemailaccount, you still have not given us proof of the fossilized bacteria found by the rover. As twiztit said, there was a discovery made back in 1999, but it wasn't even found on Mars. It was, in fact, found as a meteorite in Antarctica. That article is here:

http://www.space.com/scienceastronomy/s ... n_813.html

So please, if you're going to claim anything as significant as that, make sure that you have your facts straight.
