What do you guys think about microsoft? Do you hate it? My mom's officemates hate it, they didn't buy xbox because of it.

In my opinion, im a little so-so with microsoft, its got some good things, but some bad things. I feel more control when working with other OSes, like Linux or Unix or even MS-DOS.

Microsoft is great. They're not perfect, but for most users, Windows is the right choice for an operating system. Most of their other products are quite good as well.

MS-Dos = Microsoft Dos = Microsoft product. Weird post. Microsoft isnt perfect but its definitely a great alternative to *nux. Frankly, my experience with XP has been nothing but christmas all year round, although 98 and ME had its share of issues. I cant understand why anyone would hate Microsoft so much as to not buy their Xbox because the idea was from Microsoft. Definitely a lot of anger management issues. But when it comes down to it, there's nothing like *nix, which is why I have a dual boot O/S with red hat and xp. Best of both worlds.

I think in the beginning Microsoft did a lot for the computer industry. We would definitely not be where we are today without it.

When the idea of PC's first came out the only operating system available was DOS or UNIX among some other ones that I can't remember. Without Microsoftand IBM pushing the GUI and a user interface computers would have stayed in the realm of servers and high-end workstations.

Now saying that, I'm not a microsoft fanatic, but I think we should give them credit for helping make the PC a viable solution for home users.

Personally though, I think Windows itself needs a lot of work and *nix and *bsd are becoming much better solutions.

So all in all, we should give credit to Microsoft for its work in making PC's real, but we should not become fanatics to it and believe it's the only solution.

midgetsy do you post on rohitab?
I was just in the exact same discussion there!

The thing with microsoft is its popularity is its downfall.

Eventually there will be someone post here saying "micro$oft sux0rz the big one!!!11" (though they will probably be an ME user just trying to look cool)

Microsoft products are seen as insecure because every virus writer and spyware coder only writes the stuff for windows, there no point writing stuff that attacks an OS used by less than 1% of users (ie Linux).

Windows is ok, Microsofts business style is crappy.
If windows wasnt good then it would of been such a huge success.

I agree with the line. How else to explain their GUI sucess from the very beginning? Their GUI product did the trick and did it at the right time in a way to appeal and be available to the majority.

I don't love or hate MS, just as I don't love or hate other platforms. It is like it is considered un-hip (the man) to say you like a MS product. I am too old for such nonsense, thank god.

Actually, Apple (and a short time later, MS) both stole it from Xerox. Well, appropriated is a better term, since Xerox gave it away.

Yes, but they (apple) blew it in the 90's via not working with partners and third parties ... trying to keep all to themselves. They are, and have always been, a hardware company at heart, alas.

if anything apple are more of a globalist monopoly than microsoft, because they dont like outsiders. Your either ALL for the apple or you dont get to play.

Once you take the vulenerabilies out of the issue (which was explained before isnt microsofts fault) Windows is the perfect OS for home users.

The thing that dosnt make sense is when people bitch about MS and then use XP when there are free OS out there that , in thier opinion, r0x0rz!!1

You are very wrong on that point, linux is just a hostile environment for virii, in order for a virus to infect another file, the user running the virus has to own the file it is infecting, since root owns just about everything, since users are taught from day 1, never login in as root, the only damage a virus will do is to the contents of your home directory.

No, windows' success is based on its user friendlyness,

the majoriity of home users will judge an OS based on how easy they find it to use.
Good = Easy to most people.
