That's an excerpt from their new profile editor JS. Note the two comments indicating that they need to decide what to do with the return value (basically the response, in this case from saving your CSS changes) and saying maybe they should handle errors like it's some fancy theoretical thing to do.

Note that if no response is available they just don't do anything about it.

While they're heading in the right direction, this is just silly.
