We do IT work for the local jail, and over the weekend one of the night guards was surfing the web and clicked "ok" on a pop up that said he has spyware. Big mistake!!! Now he really does have adware, and it is a doozie too! It is actually kind of fun for me to fix it because I don't get to play with stuff like this that often. It changed the desktop background for all users who log in to a big message saying we owe them money for activating our antivirus software. And it installed that classic practical joke screen saver, the BSOD screen saver. I didn't fall for it because I've done that prank before. Then I realized that it took the desktop and screen saver tabs out of the display properties when you right click the desktop. When I looked in task manager there were tons and tons of processes running, and when I got the junk ones stopped the computer ran a lot faster.

The way this crap got installed is a bad thing though. The antivirus they have has had an expired license for a really long time, so it hasn't been auto-protecting or scanning or recieving updates for a really long time. I tried to go online to use the trend micro house call scanner, but every web page I tried to go automatically got redirected to a seemingly random page telling me I owe them activation fees for the software they installed. I downloaded AVG on a different computer and burned it to a cd then installed it on this one (the infected machine is off my network for the time being) and the scan found nothing. My next course of action is to use system restore to roll it back to a restore point before the boo-boo happened. I don't want to rebuild it because of the pain in the butt software they have installed on it.

Normally something like this would make me really mad having to fix it, but it is actually kind of neat and a little exciting finding all the stuff this virus writing scum is doing to my gear. Just thought I'd share the experience with you good folks on 'zu.

You should ask the guard if the porn was worth it.

And since then we've had one more computer on my other network get the same bug. I totally screwed up the first one and am rebuilding it as I type this, and my boss is actually making headway finding bad registry keys and stuff on the other one.
