As far as I'm aware...
The forum can be set to "View Unread Messages" or "View Posts Since Last Visit" (The same URL is used for both - I believe it's an admin setting).
Both of those will show new posts with the image..
Or at least, they'll show whatever the folder_new.gif image is on that particular forum.
If you haven't read these posts yet, they will also have this image..
Under "View Unread Messages", once you've read the message, it disappears from the list. On "View Posts Since Last Visit" mode, the messages don't disappear from the list, because it was still posted since you last visited the site, and won't disappear til you go from the site and stay away long enough for the forum software to consider the next time you load it, a new visit.
But, after you've read each of the posts, even though the listing for that thread still remains, this image...
disappears.
That way, you can keep track of which of those new posts you've read and haven't
