again, as with nessie, you need sustainable populations. you can't have 'one' of anything - heck even the bible agreed it should be two at least. A reasonable sustainable population differs depending on breeding habits of different animals, but certainly a few dozen need to exist in one place in order to make it possible for them to always produce enough offspring to continue the species.

I'm guessing you've never had pet mice ?

Growing up I knew a lot of people who started out with 2 mice & in no time they were asking everyone they knew if they wanted some mice. I've known snake owners who depend on this. :)

In all fairness though, with the mice they're in a controlled environment away from predators. Yet, I would kinda expect something like a bigfoot to be atop of the food chain in its' environment. :scratchhead:

yeah, same goes for stick insects :D or jellyfish. but such animals have large litters. a good rule of thumb is - the smaller the animal the more numerous the offspring. large animals - like elephants, gorillas, abominable snowmen and cave-dwelling plesiosaurs - would be far more likely to have one calf/ offspring/ young/ whatever every one to two years - and if something happened to it.....

that's why we do get overrun by roaches and mice, but not by elephants and gorillas :D

We don't get over run by elephants and gorillas all the time, just every once in a while. :)

Yeah, I'm so young I don't even remember the last gorilla infestation :D

(slightly relatedly, a friend of mine had a tendency to praise different products for their effectiveness, and then tack a line at the end, saying 'yeah, and it keeps the elephants away, too...' and if you'd give him a quizzical look or ask wtf he'd say 'well you don't see any around, do you?' :D)

I don't know why but your thing about your friends tag line made me remember a few weeks ago when my main lady Staci and I were looking at new cars for her. We popped the trunk on one and she real casually said "You could fit three bodies in there." And I nonchalantly said "Maybe four." and the salesman didn't even blink or flinch or anything.
