Hi.. I am arranging membership options for my online community.

There will be various levels of membership, each with different levels of responsibility.

So I thought it best to add a quick test to assess whether the person should join at that position or apply another paid membership.

Do you guys think it would sound harsh to do this? Or give them a sense of achievement and small excitement that they have been accepted? I don't want to offend prospective members :?

If it were me, I wouldn't be offended. I'd actually prefer to have an idea about what I was paying for and what would be expected of me beforehand.
I'd love to change the world, but they won't give me the source code.

I agree, but I think you'd better consider very carefully if you have something people will WANT to pay for in the first place. If you have a subscription with extra hurdles of a test, its just one more reason for people to walk away and not give you any money.
If at first you don't succeed F1... If that doesn't work try Google!

So true... Thanks guys.

I do want to offer people a preview of what they will be getting before signing up. I dont want to get any "mistake" subscriptions. I would really like people to know the full details first.
