I remember back in electronics class in high school there was this one kid who obsessed over building a tesla coil, starting in freshman year and then finally finishing it in senior year. It was funny because he searched high and low for the absolute perfect parts, but meanwhile I sourced junk from around the classroom and built a jacobs ladder in just a few days.

Nice. I always thought it would be cool to build one but that whole potential death thing always made me think better of it.

That was one thing this kid experienced first hand. He said he was playing with the fly back transformer he salvaged from a television set in his bedroom and it zapped him and he said his hand kind of hurt for a few minutes after that.

Yikes, no thanks. It's the shocks that you can't feel that are capable of instantly shutting down your nervous/respiratory systems. That's just too much power for something I would be 'tinkering' with.
