Isn't being "once a thief" itself the exception? Being "once a thief" is hardly a description of cleptomania.

It's the people who are "thrice" four and five times a thief you have to watch.

I've got a similar story to jflynn. People can change. I would base my answer to your question on the age and maturity of the person. In the end, though, none of us can really tell you the best thing. You know this person - you have to make the decision that's best for you.
I'd love to change the world, but they won't give me the source code.

That depends...did he steal your identity and run up thousands and thousands of dollars of debt in your name, or did he take $20 out of your wallet without you asking?

A "friend" wouldn't steal from you.

That is interesting... if they stole something I don't think that I would see them as a thieve for the rest of my life... unless they continue to keep on stealing...

But if they steal someone, then I would see them as a thieve for the rest of my life even that was their first time :|

It depends, what was a punishment. If a punishment was nasty and hard for thief, so it he/she will be less like to this the same one more time. Exceptions are psycho etc.

it depends on what the 'crime' was, what their reasons were, and how sorry they seem. I think forgiving but not forgetting is a good principle - I have forgiven people like that, and moved on, but there are certain things I will never trust them with again. So I guess you forgive, and try to rebuild the relationship, but remember that you need to keep yourself safe from this person. And don't make them your best friend or anything.
