When you say "designing", are you refering to only the visual aspects?

I find it so funny when I look on career websites for web design jobs, and they entail mostly a programmers duty. Its so annoying because the words "web design" mean more then one thing apparently.

I think the better description is web development/developer, as a catch-all. Designer, to me, means the graphic design side. I'm not sure you can really make a living as a "designer" unless you're REALLY good.

Even still, a web 'designer' is useless if they don't understand how the rest of the development process works, IMO.

Bogey to those who are not familiar or already work in the development business, web design means everything to do with the web. Not a lot of people coming into the industry are aware theres a lot more to it then just the graphics you see.

Isn't "web" short for "website", which would make it "website designer" ?

It makes sense IAWWAAE and EWTBAD IMO.

A designer should be able to do all the front end aspects of the site. That is design the website, HTML, CSS and a bit of JavaScript. A developer should do the back end stuff, PHP, MySQL, ASP, RUBY, Actionscript etc.

Is web design a good career for you? Do you actually possess any design talent? I wanted to be a web designer but I find development suits me far better.

I'm not entirely sure about Ruby though I think it's both, but Actionscript is definately frontend & backend.

I dont agree. Web design is just the way a website look. Graphics and flow, but not programming.

At my company, the web designers, have no idea what PHP is. The programmers make twice the $$$$

I've put together the following illustration to demonstrate why this is. :D

PHP Code: [ Download ] [ Select ]
<?php

class mountain

{

   protected $price;

   public function __construct($budget)

   {

      $this->price .= $budget;

   }

}

class molehill extends mountain

{

   public function __construct($budget)

   {

      $this->price = $budget;

      parent::__construct($budget);

   }

   public function get_quote()

   {

      return $this->price;

   }

}

$budget = '$$';

$project = new molehill($budget);

print $project->get_quote();

?>
  1. <?php
  2.
  3. class mountain
  4.
  5. {
  6.
  7.    protected $price;
  8.
  9.
  10.
  11.    public function __construct($budget)
  12.
  13.    {
  14.
  15.       $this->price .= $budget;
  16.
  17.    }
  18.
  19. }
  20.
  21. class molehill extends mountain
  22.
  23. {
  24.
  25.    public function __construct($budget)
  26.
  27.    {
  28.
  29.       $this->price = $budget;
  30.
  31.       parent::__construct($budget);
  32.
  33.    }
  34.
  35.    public function get_quote()
  36.
  37.    {
  38.
  39.       return $this->price;
  40.
  41.    }
  42.
  43. }
  44.
  45.
  46.
  47. $budget = '$$';
  48.
  49. $project = new molehill($budget);
  50.
  51. print $project->get_quote();
  52.
  53. ?>
Why yes, yes I am.
