What is a 'Breadcrumb'?

I actually know what a breadcrumb is, but I have a question about it. How many people actually know what a breadcrumb is. I know I'm picking a forum where most people should know, but I'm wondering how many general web surfers (not designers/programmers, etc.) actually know.

The reason I ask is I'm marketing one of our client's sites and on the internal pages it says, "Please continue to choose your location by using the breadcrumb above".

Example: http://www.sea2skyrentals.com/advanced_ ... A&state=CA

I'm just wondering how many average people say, "what the hell is a breadcrumb".

Any input is much appreciated.

Thanks,

Tim

I know, but only because the term happened to come up in a project I did a couple of months ago (integrating with DotNetNuke). I suggest most people wouldn't.

This is great feedback for me. A couple more and I think I can prove my point and get them to change it.

Thanks All!

Make it "Breadcrumb Navigation", "Breadcrumb History", or somthing else that may spark the thought of Hanzel & Gretel in their mind & ask some non-techy people.

"Breadcrumb" anything might never make any sense to someone from a culture that doesn't know that fairy tale.
In some cultures, it might even confuse them & read "Use the insignificant floor sweepings above".

He should change it. Whilst it might be okay for the web site designers of the world how come across it's site it won't be so easy to understand for the people who are just visiting who may not be clued up on it.

what is "breadcrumb" anyways, aside from being the powdered remains of a bread used in cooking?

It is the navigation links used in a heirarchy of web pages. I guess the best example would be dmoz. Its a way to go back to where you navigated from without using the back button.

Yes I know what it is, but if I wasn't a web developer I would probably choose ATNO/TW's answer.
