Have no fear. Facebook will now "memorialize" your account.

Quote:
Facebook has announced plans to preserve the accounts of dead members as a "memorial" for friends and family.

The company says it will give previously confirmed friends of the deceased access to their "memorialised" Facebook page, which will continue to display photos and wall posts, but remove "sensitive information" such as status updates and contact information.

"When an account is memorialised, we set privacy so that only confirmed friends can see the profile or locate it in search," the company's Max Kelly writes on the Facebook blog. "Memorialising an account also prevents anyone from logging into it in the future, while still enabling friends and family to leave posts on the profile Wall in remembrance."

That's pretty cool, even if Facebook is doomed to repeat MySpaces past. :D

So in other words its the facebook funeral home. When you die, they embalm your account, put it in a casket, bury it, and then your friends and family can visit the grave and leave flowers and stuff. Just like a regular funeral home and graveyard.

Someone should call Facebook up and inform them that they have died and would like to have their account memorialized. I wonder what would happen.

I subscribe to a ham radio magazine called QST and they have a special section called "silent keys", which memorializes ham radio operators who have died. So to get your buddies or your dads or who evers name and call sign you have to present them with a copy of the death certificate. That would make sense if facebook had a requirement like that.

I read about this elsewhwere. In order for FB to memorialise your account when you die a friend or family must notify FB with proof of your death whether it;s a death certificate or news report.

It is a good idea in a way, however i know if i knew someone on FB had died i wouldn't really be in a significantly big hurry to notify them of it.

People everywhere worldwide, no matter what religion or race, tend to want to remember and honor their loved ones in whatever way they can. You'll see "shrines" all over the world that proves it. Not to mention the cemeteries where we visit our departed. I sort of see this move as a fairly normal one. Sort of a "shrine" thing.

I had to resurrect this in light of this "undead" story I just read.

The name that sounds like "stillborn" was a nice touch.
