I always thought Google indexes the web every single day. Search
results continually change from day to day with new content being reflected
in the search results.

What are these "updates" that folks still speak of ?

Goodle periosically updates the Page Rank and backlinks for sites. But you are correct -they actually index sites nearly every day.

THIS might help understand the updates these guys are refering to.

Hi,

"indexing" refers to putting the pages in a certain order, with SERPs, this would be by relevance.

"crawling" and "spidering" refer to the Googlebot following known links
and storing new ones.

From what I've read, Google has two systems. One which crawls the
web updating it's database of pages and the other for sorting it's
database for the SERPS and for the PageRank.

Both of these systems run 24/7 and the actual computers are scattered
about the world in Google's datacenters.

There are two types of pagerank: internal pagerank and external pagerank. Google is calculating web page's pageranks 24/7, but that is only the internal pagerank. These updates are when google refreshes the external pagerank (the out-dated stuff you see in the toolbar) with the current internal pageranks.

This is why PR is not always reliable. Some PR 0 pages may actually be a PR 2, but the page was probably created after the last update so you don't know it's real pagerank. Likewise people can trick you because their PR appears to be high, but it may actually be lower and you just don't know it because their PR hasn't been updated since they lost links from some high pagerank sites.

But there are more updates than just pagerank updates. You should check out http://www.seocompany.ca/pagerank/page- ... -list.html to see some of the other types of updates.

Hope this helps!

What I have seen in the past is a lot of serp activity about 4-6 weeks after a Pagerank update.
