Nobody really knows for sure... without knowing precisely how google's pagerank algorithm works, it's impossible to know. There's a lot of speculation on the internet though... there are lots of websites that have tried to do studies and analysis of the PageRank... I'd recommend searching google (the irony...) for PageRank info. (But keep in mind that although people can try many things, you really can't get a completely 100% accurate idea of how PageRank works without working at google) :)

Okay... lets not talk about links.

H1 tags are worth more than bold text. That has been proven over and over again.

Saying that, wouldn't it be more 'logical' eventhough it is not 'proven' that H1 tags would be better.

Dan Thies stated the same.

I can't really see the logical reason why h1 og bold backlinks would be better.

I'd say that a backlink is a backlink is a backlink...

No.. all backlinks are NOT created equal - text of the link matters, PR of the page it's on matter, as I'm sure many other factors matter - each engine ranking things in there own way... why would all backlinks be equal?

I agree with that. Still i don't se why bold, italic or h1, h2 or any other style would be a factor.

It is suggested that H1... H6 - strong, and various other HTML elements have an impact on their weighting within a page for ranking, why wouldn't they have similar impacts when it comes to weighting of a link.

I'm not saying they do - only that I have an open mind on such matters... it's a reasonable assumption that SOME search engines might have a weighting on them.. however unlikely.

regards

Crawler will only recognize the anchor text and links inside <a href></a> tag. It dont care whether you make it bold or whatever using <h1> tag. As <h1> is used to describe a title of a page not a title of a link.

Title of a link is an "anchor text" it is placed <a href=>HERE</a>

BTW, who is going to give your link a <h1> :D
Tell me, i want to exchange link with him too

The concept that we trying to determine is if you ultilize bold anchors or a heading anchor (H1 through H6), if this has any affect on the ranking algo by SE's. Now there are two different factors to consider with the anchor tag.
A) Destination link page ranking boost
B) Or current page placement ranking boost

You might be right that it will not have any effect on any additional ranking boost for the link destination page, but you have to consider that SE's due favor Keyword rich anchor text on the origination page and by this might boost the pages revelancy for the keyword.

All I have to say is CSS.

When all else fails go back to the authority ...

The Anatomy of a Large-Scale Hypertextual Web Search Engine

Quote:
2.3 Other Features
... Google keeps track of some visual presentation details such as font size of words. Words in a larger or bolder font are weighted higher than other words...

Quote:
4.2.5 Hit Lists
A hit list corresponds to a list of occurrences of a particular word in a particular document including position, font, and capitalization information...

... There are two types of hits: fancy hits and plain hits. Fancy hits include hits occurring in a URL, title, anchor text, or meta tag. Plain hits include everything else...

... A fancy hit consists of a capitalization bit, the font size set to 7 to indicate it is a fancy hit, 4 bits to encode the type of fancy hit, and 8 bits of position. For anchor hits, the 8 bits of position are split into 4 bits for position in anchor and 4 bits for a hash of the docID the anchor occurs in.

Quote:
4.5.1 The Ranking System
In order to rank a document with a single word query, Google looks at that document's hit list for that word. Google considers each hit to be one of several different types (title, anchor, URL, plain text large font, plain text small font, ...), each of which has its own type-weight.

Given the above information it appears Google can track whether it is a URL or the font characteristics ... but not both.

Yes, it is. Keyword relevency is important and is one of the ranking factor. But creating a relevency keyword does not need to be <h1>to<h6> tag or making it bold in order to weigh heavier.

Thus, <h1> and bold does not have any effect in creating relevency.
Anyway, H1 and <B> isnt the element of <A HREF></A>

I stated it will boost the revelancy of a certain keyword. What other effect would a heading or a or <B> tag have.

The more keywords / similar keywords are present on the page / website, the more revelant the site is to that keyword / keyword phrase.

Ex: If there are 10 exact matches to a keyword or keyword phrase than making them all bold would boost the revelancy of those 10 keywords since they are emphasized

Definition of emphasize: stress: to stress, single out as important / give extra weight to

Quote:

You are right. There are other means of doing so.

It doesnt boost relevency of your keyword. <h1>got nothing to do with with relevency except telling SE what your site is all about.
While <b> tag just incease the visibility of a link to your visitors. It catch the eye of your visitors easily.
