Duplicate Pages

Post May 24th, 2007, 8:26 am

Hi, I've read that Google penalizes a site for having duplicate pages. My main pages are shop pages with graphics, a few lines of descriptive text per product and links to pages with the full details of each product. As the description is similar, I'm wondering if the pages are being seen as duplicate as most of them are in the supplementals. :scratchhead:

From my understanding and I am sure other peopole here will give you insight as to how wrong I am if I am :) is that duplicate pages are considered bad if they are the same page duplicated using a different URL... the content being the same.

But from what you are saying it sounds like you have similiar pages, but not necessarily duplicate pages. So I am not sure if they would penalize you for using a basic template across the board for your products, if that were the case a majority of sites online would be slammed for that.

the duplicate content penatly is a problem for a lot of sites, and you don't have to have duplicate content on each page to trigger it. I have two sites that have a few thousand products, all different, but much of the text on the page is the same, except for a few lines. I have been working on it and been pretty successful, but it takes time. You need to reduce the similarity of one page to another. Reducing this will help keep you/get you out of supplemental.

To see if any of your pages are in the supplemental index, do the site:domain.com search in Google and go through all your pages to see if any say Supplemental.

To help fix this problem, use a tool like http://www.webconfs.com/similar-page-checker.php to check the similarity of two or more pages.
