checking for example

http://www.hostwhere.com
and http://hostwhere.com

will give diff results. what's the best practise?

Ya obviously they will give different results as Search engine consider these as two different URLs.

If the both site are same you can use 301 redirect that is an ethical SEO practice.

Focus on on page factors little more as keywords, content, internal linking, images, etc
try to add new content time to time. Use less no of images and graphics as you can, try to add keywords within your content ....well if you have good ranking on yahoo then you do not to worry if you have a little different in yahoo and Msn ranking as rankings fluctuate a little bit time to time...

This was a great list . I usually used this command in checking the backlinks of our site. Is there different results if I used www and without www?

# link:url Shows other pages with links to that url.
# site:domain restricts search results to the given domain.

A few things you might want to try with Google:

  1. Install the Google Toolbar so you can easily check PageRank, backlinks, similar sites, and sites with text containing the name of a given site.
  2. Enter just the word http for your search to find the top 1000 PageRanked sites (unfortunately, the listing stops near the beginning of the 7's).
  3. Hand type the following prefixes and note their utility:

    1. link:url Shows other pages with links to that url.
    2. related:url same as "what's related" on serps.
    3. site:domain restricts search results to the given domain.
    4. allinurl: shows only pages with all terms in the url.
    5. inurl: like allinurl, but only for the next query word.
    6. allintitle: shows only results with terms in title.
    7. intitle: similar to allintitle, but only for the next word. "intitle:webmasterworld google" finds only pages with webmasterworld in the title, and google anywhere on the page.
    8. cache:url will show the Google version of the passed url.
    9. info:url will show a page containing links to related searches, backlinks, and pages containing the url. This is the same as typing the url into the search box.
    10. spell: will spell check your query and search for it.
    11. stocks: will lookup the search query in a stock index.
    12. filetype: will restrict searches to that filetype. "-filetype:doc" to remove Microsoft word files.
    13. daterange: is supported in Julian date format only. 2452384 is an example of a Julian date.
    14. maps: If you enter a street address, a link to Yahoo Maps and to MapBlast will be presented.
    15. phone: enter anything that looks like a phone number to have a name and address displayed. Same is true for something that looks like an address (include a name and zip code)
    16. site:www.somesite.net "+www.somesite.+net"
(tells you how many pages of your site are indexed by google)
    17. allintext: searches only within text of pages, but not in the links or page title
    18. allinlinks: searches only within links, not text or title
  4. Check out Froogle and Google Catalogs.
  5. Google API

It is so good for SEO.

Hey there,

At the beginning of this discussion, I saw a conversation where people were stating the different between someDomain.com and http://www.someDomain.com.

There is a utility in google webmaster tools that allows webmasters to select one or the other. The google documentation says that selecting one of these helps google determine PR better.

Google webmaster tools has a lot of other great utilities as well.

There is a lot of great information in this thread. Great job guys!

Sincerely,
