http://www.google.com/webalerts

With this you can:
keep current on a competitor or industry
monitor references to your name or company
find out when people link to your site
discover new websites on a certain topic

I feel better. I finally found the source of the kitten picture they used in that "every time you masterbate God kills a kitten" email joke that went around for a while... it's at http://kittens.sytes.org/ (which was linked to by one of those cool mirror sites you guys posted - that stuff is weird.... the Google one freaked me out!

cyberax, true saying though eh, take this week, a girl died, very young, they could'nt find the reason so slapped a "died from natural causes" on the certificate...lots of unexplained deaths become "natrual causes" for some unexplanable reason!

had a quick browse of the over post and didnt see this little trick pop up :D

Write this string in google search:

"parent directory " /appz/ -xxx -html -htm -php -shtml -opendivx -md5 -md5sums

"parent directory " DVDRip -xxx -html -htm -php -shtml -opendivx -md5 -md5sums

"parent directory "Xvid -xxx -html -htm -php -shtml -opendivx -md5 -md5sums

"parent directory " Gamez -xxx -html -htm -php -shtml -opendivx -md5 -md5sums

"parent directory " MP3 -xxx -html -htm -php -shtml -opendivx -md5 -md5sums

"parent directory " Name of Singer or album -xxx -html -htm -php -shtml -opendivx -md5 -md5sums

Notice that i am only changing the word after the parent directory, change it to what you want and you will get a lot of stuff.

Do them searches and tell me if its a handy trick or not!

Great tips and tricks everyone - Just a simple enough question though -

Do links posted in forums count as backlinks? And is it also important to whom you link along with who links you?

Cuz I had a PR2 site and when I linked to high PR sites, within a week my PR jumped from 2 to 3.

Also for a PR3 site, how many days does it take for Google to index it?

depending on the forum, some forums are set up not to count as backlinks.

didn't realize google saw http://www.misterbling.com differently than misterbling.com

My whole site was lacking the www. exept for the mainpage. I thought only subdomians were different.

All the time making sef urls , alt tags, header tags, sitemaps all products pages and countless directory listings.

Wondering why the pr : 1 would not go away and though I saw tons of bots surfing my site they weren't really.

Thanks so much. Great thread.

link:yoursite doesn't show all the links.

Try also:

link;yoursite

and

@yoursite

It seems that
link;www.yoursite.com
is exactly the same as
link http://www.yoursite.com
The ; char is ignored by Google and just seen as a separator

But
link:;www.yoursite.com
returns a different answer than
link:www.yoursite.com

It seems that
@www.yoursite.com
is exactly the same as
"www.yoursite.com" (with quotes)

But
*www.yoursite.com
returns a different answer

Any ignored character ( @ ; * / ) glued at the beginning of a multi word expression gives similiar results (but not allways exactly the same) as "www.yoursite.com" (with quotes)

Does anybody have more infos about that? Is there a site which talk about that?

I was told to use these words like "allintitle" and "allinurl", "allinanchor", "adsenseadvisor" etc. in my NEGATIVE keyword list. Is this a good idea to do and if so WHY? :?:

I haven't found this anywhere here so having courage to post. Please ignore if already been discussed.

Put the expression
Quote:
7*2+2
in the search box and Google will calculate the result.

To convert currency
put
Quote:
3.5 USD in GBP
and google will convert 3.5 USD to 1.9054878 British pounds

Search in a number range

Search DVD player that costs between $250 and $350 as
Quote:
DVD player $250..350

Synonym Search

If you want to search not only for your search term but also for its synonyms, place the tilde sign ("~") immediately in front of your search term.

For example, here's how to search for food facts and nutrition and cooking information:

~food ~facts
