best is to submit to a site/directory that does not require you to link back :)
Art has to move you and design does not, unless it's a good design for a bus.

i think this is a smart thing to do instead of submit your site with a back link:
1.because if you want to submit you site in about 500 directories you really waste your space with links
2.you site's aspect looks more cool with no parteners links :)

But some free directories use the rel=nofollow so you wont have any advantage.

A few things you might want to try with Google:

  1. Install the Google Toolbar so you can easily check PageRank, backlinks, similar sites, and sites with text containing the name of a given site.
  2. Enter just the word http for your search to find the top 1000 PageRanked sites (unfortunately, the listing stops near the beginning of the 7's).
  3. Hand type the following prefixes and note their utility:

    1. link:url Shows other pages with links to that url.
    2. related:url same as "what's related" on serps.
    3. site:domain restricts search results to the given domain.
    4. allinurl: shows only pages with all terms in the url.
    5. inurl: like allinurl, but only for the next query word.
    6. allintitle: shows only results with terms in title.
    7. intitle: similar to allintitle, but only for the next word. "intitle:webmasterworld google" finds only pages with webmasterworld in the title, and google anywhere on the page.
    8. cache:url will show the Google version of the passed url.
    9. info:url will show a page containing links to related searches, backlinks, and pages containing the url. This is the same as typing the url into the search box.
    10. spell: will spell check your query and search for it.
    11. stocks: will lookup the search query in a stock index.
    12. filetype: will restrict searches to that filetype. "-filetype:doc" to remove Microsoft word files.
    13. daterange: is supported in Julian date format only. 2452384 is an example of a Julian date.
    14. maps: If you enter a street address, a link to Yahoo Maps and to MapBlast will be presented.
    15. phone: enter anything that looks like a phone number to have a name and address displayed. Same is true for something that looks like an address (include a name and zip code)
    16. site:www.somesite.net "+www.somesite.+net"
(tells you how many pages of your site are indexed by google)
    17. allintext: searches only within text of pages, but not in the links or page title
    18. allinlinks: searches only within links, not text or title

  4. Check out Froogle and Google Catalogs.
  5. Google API

Really cool tips bigwebmaster............its really very much useful to us to search quickly and correctly on google........thank a lot

I have observed that when I visited backlinks of MSN, it does not showed any results. I used +linkdomain : URL in checking the backlinks in MSN.
