I'm getting some links from different people and I'm wondering whether I should direct them to my index page or if I should link to a sub page on my site.

My index page isn't really configured for any big search phrases. However all of my sub pages are. Would it help me more to get anchor text to the smaller pages that are better optimized. Or is just a link to your site in general as good as anything else?

What I usually do is first link them to your homepage and build that up, because it will leak PR to all your subpages. Then after I get lots links, I will start linking a few to each of my main subpages.

What do you consider a lot of links? 100? 500? 1000?

PR would leak upwards also wouldn't it? So if I were to link to my sub pages I would still get the benefit of PR but would also get to use anchor text.

Well, for now I consider 100 links a lot of links, just because I am very picky with my link exchanges. I the pages you have them point to all depend on how those pages are optimized. If you homepage really isn't optimized for a specific keyword/keywords than have them point to the subpages. I usually try to focus my best term on the homepage which is often the most competitive, so I try to get as much PR to that page as possible. I just see a lot of top 10 listings where the actual page in the serp does not have the highest PR, but the actual homepage of that site does have a huge PR which helps push that page to the top in the serps.

I totally agree with you though. That is why once I get a site to a PR5 or PR6, I try to start directing any outside links to inner pages.

I usually do the same. Get as many links as possible on the main page with a few different variations of the anchor text, and then link to internals; once there's enough PR on the main index page, then start getting s few links to the sub pages.
