DMOZ must be the hardest - my site is yet to get listed there. What I wonder is though, I have seen many not so impressive sites listed there. The ones with not much traffic and not so good quality. Is there any other way to get listed there?

I know, for yahoo directory you have to pay a hefty amount to get listed.

According to your site ,click into the corresponding directory.Firstly , you'd better find a directory which suit for the contents of your site. Second, written description of your site and it must be in line with the theme of your site.Third, make sure your website is effectively, faster speed, best page layout ,images links must be effective. Fourth,do not submit multiple directories at the same time. Don't submit mulytiple directories to a large directory ,but you can submit at the same time in different major directory .
After submitting , there's two things you need to do ,one is leave a message to the Editor, the other is leave message to the forum .
The last is waiting ,hehe

DMOZ is most difficult directory to get listed. google uses OPD for showing search results but both are not the same.

You can find a lot of top ranking websites which never appear anywhere in those two directories.

Do not forget this fact that even after getting listed there, they are just two links and you will need a lot of links for having top ranking websites.

Dmoz is harder.

Also getting a free link from niche directories(non reciprocal) is harder.

It has to be dmoz without a doubt. I would try submitting sites but never had any luck. Much easier for me to climb mount everest.

DMOZ for me. I think what Alec said above regarding the bad quality of accepted sites at DMOZ is something I agree with.
Also DMOZ does not has the best category system which makes it very hard to find the right category for your site.
