Yeah, the site I've been working on went straight in from a 0/10 PR (I put the site up at the end of December), and this morning, live on Google, it's got a 5/10 PR with 514 PR4+ backlinks.

Hey everone. I was just reading an article on google and SEO.
This guys said joing a link farm or link ring is a really bad idea?
Is this true, or speculative?
I joined one called the florida hunting trail you can see it at the bottom of my page.

Do you all advise against this?

It's not that they're necessarily a BAD idea, at least not the one you've implemented, it's just the way that particular one is implemented, it's not going to help you with any search engines...

The actual HTML code for that bit of the page (and all the links it entails) isn't actually in your HTML source. Instead it pulls some javascript...

Code: [ Select ]
<!-- The OutdoorRings.com fragment -The Florida Hunting Trail-->
       <SCRIPT LANGUAGE="JavaScript" SRC="http://www.OutdoorRings.com/frag.php?FRM=12855&RN=14"></SCRIPT>
<!--end of The OutdoorRings.com Ring fragment -The Florida Hunting Trail-->
  1.        <!-- The OutdoorRings.com fragment -The Florida Hunting Trail-->
  2.        <SCRIPT LANGUAGE="JavaScript" SRC="http://www.OutdoorRings.com/frag.php?FRM=12855&RN=14"></SCRIPT>
  3.        <!--end of The OutdoorRings.com Ring fragment -The Florida Hunting Trail-->

Google (and most any other search engine) doesn't understand, and therefore doesn't read JavaScript code.

So, even if links to your site are being displayed on other sites in the ring, Google isn't picking up on those.

Webrings like that, which use JavaScript to display it are purely for human traffic. Even if there's 1,000 other sites in the ring, and they are all linking to you in the ring code, it won't make a bit of difference to Google and other search engines.

I just checked google again and my pr is down to a 0 again.
It changed in a matter of 5 mins.
What do you all show my pr as?
http://www.floridafishandhunt.com

I see PR1 too.

My brand new site (less then a month old) jumped up from PR0 to PR4 :) But google shows only a few backlinks - may be next month it will show all of them.

You dont ever have to do anything. PR is only updated beyond google's initial ranking by aquiring inbound links. Check your IBL's and you should see some new ones.

True, but I didnt expect my PR to increase when I havent found new links in forever. And I know my blog isnt one that people would want to link to, afterall new posts are added maybe once a month.

http://www.google.com/search?q=floridaf ... 8&filter=0

wooohooooo My stuff is starting to get spidered (Ithink)

I typed in floridafishandhunt

and clicked the omitted results text and saw my pages there.
That hasnt happened before.
I was so excited I almost wet myself.
Heh.

I then typed T.M. Goodwin which was the name of an article I wrote on a duck hunting spot and I was in the top 4 or 5

I then tried florida fishing of course no luck.

As my page rank goes up does my position on searched terms go up?

Thanks Guys!
