For getting backlinks you need to do following exercises :

I think you can good enough backlinks by submitting to directories and search engines, posting on forums with your signature, article submission, rss submission, etc. Do all these and wait for some time.

If the website you are wishing to promote is selling Real Estate, your best bet would be to do a Google search:

real estate directories
or
real estate directories add URL

You can customize the search criteria by including a specific Country or City.

Go through the search results and start requesting links. Any links you gather will not only be backlinks, they will be targeting your proper market.

:D It does take time and energy building and marketing your site but the results are well worth the effort.

You need a lot of backlinks before Google shows any MSN is easier to get backlinks then Yahoo, Google generally shows less than the others although what is shown is not the real figure. Keep building relevant links and eventually Google will show some backlinks for your site. I think Google only updates link numbers about 3 or 4 times a year.

I have been submitting about 10 backlinks a day. Is this too many? A lot of times it takes weeks for me to know if I was even added. What do you recommend?

If you have lack of back links then try to submit your site in 20-30 directories per day for 15 days and then submit your site in 10-15 directories. If you have less number of back links then increase your submission rate. Along with article directories try to participate in press releases.

I would not recommend that. Getting 200+ links in just 15 days is going to raise some flags.

Hey the google backlinks are always different from what are shown by yahoo and msn. To get backlinks try directories submission, articles submission to quality directories, participate in forums and one thing very important is social bookmarking. Google always keeps track on how a webpage is bookmarked by people. So do bookmarking for sure, it will really help you out.

I don't exactly agree with this. I have seen websites get more than 2000 back links a week from various people commenting on blogs and forums. It doesn't really matter how many you get, it's more about quality. You may just find that not all of the links are used in Google. If you where to raise flags and get your website from it, then I could start submitting comments and posts all over the internet about any website I wanted to get sand bagged.

Don't try too hard either. Give high quality links on external sites. If google has the notion you are trying to add backlinks for the sake of adding backlinks, you'll be penalized.

Google tends to not show you all the backlinks that you have and the ones that they do show you, don't necessarily hold their weight.
