There have been rumors of 3TB hard drives floating around for awhile now. I came across this little gem at the website of Seagate, a hard drive developer, while looking into it today.

Quote:
Some of the basic design decisions made in the original computer architecture left the industry with inherent limitations. One of those limitations is the ability to address hard drives that exceed capacities of 2.1TB. The decision was made back in 1980 to limit the LBA (logical block address) range to 2.1TB – more than enough capacity in those early days.

I thought it was about the density and stability of the magnetic platter?

But yeah, maybe they should invent the next NTFS?

I meant that we used to have FAT, then they developed NTFS - New Technology File System. Could they do a similar thing for the LBA - NTLBA?

Here I thought NTFS stood for NeTwork File System.

It looks like Seagate is pushing something called Long LBA (LLBA)

In the early days 2.1 TB was quite a huge volume. Hence the decision looked pragmatic then but right now, it's not a realistic one.
