In general, which company would you opt for, for your graphics card?

*note..nothing below a 128MB, and I'm looking at a 256MB f x card.

I won't do it to you twice in one night by merging your post again. I know you are trying but there is a search link at the top of every page:

Both products have had there day .lol They tie each other up ,
and twist and shout ! I always like Nvidia (Ati is there too ) I try
AMD ,and always go back to Intel (and thats a AMD 64 4000+)
Can't compete with Intel .o well .Your best bet is ,budget wize.
X700 ATI or 6600 GT ( I think ) in the real world ..both will give
you what you want . (now it's price ? )

Athlon 64 4000+ smokes Intel at everything right now except multi-tasking.

If you want a cheap one that works almost as good as some $300 ones, I would go with nVIDIA GeForce FX5200. I have it with 3.2 pentium 4 and 1.5 GB ram and my computer never freezes up or slows down while playing games or watching DVDs.

That's the fault of your operating system.

Yes, yes they do. :D

Anyway, I'd say nVidia every time, although I may be tainted by the fact that ATi's Linux driver support sucks (and is in fact non-existant for Athlon64s...). I haven't heard good things about their Windows drivers, either.

I spent more hours than humanly possible researching the best cards late this year playing with AA and AF cranked right up and image quality. All 3 cards are superb! I own the Geforce 6800 128MB and is best value overall IMO but Radeon 9800 Pro is over 30% cheaper and can play any current game.

Budget: ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 128MB (AGP)
Midrange: Geforce 6800 128MB (AGP)
Spoilt/rich: Geforce 6800 Ultra 256 MB

Games I play: Half Life 2, MOHAA clan matches, Doom 3.

I like Nvidia, especially if you plan on running over 1024x768. In all test I've seen Nvidia cards usually do better in the higher settings. If you plan on using 1024x768...go ATI they usually do better in that setting. You can check out Tomshardware.com for proof! And stay away from the LE version of Nvidia..also known as the poor man's card! I have the FX5700LE, but I went with PNY's version because it has heat sinks on the memory, that and because I didn't know LE was the cheaper version...lol! Nvidia has a 6600GT (I think it's GT) with AGP 8x which on the Tom's Hardware site does a good job keeping up with the PCI express cards, and holds it's own with the 9800 pro! Pricewatch.com had it for around $220!

Good Luck and don't be cheap, it'll cost ya in the end!

WHO IN THE HELL DOESN'T MULTITASK NOWADAYS? My dad multitasks and he doesn't even do anything special on the computer (MSN messenger, IE, Quicken Financial, pcAnywhere).

I have used both and the P4 w/ HT owns at everything but gaming, but when you have a 6800GT it doesn't matter what processor you have because the card does it all! Sorry!

BACK ON TOPIC:
I love nVidia. They are always gonna be my favorite card out. A lot of "hardcore" gamers don't like them because they are mainstream. Same thing as how punk rockers dont like three days grace...because they are mainstream and jealous!

The 6800GT is in my computer, although the Ultra is my choice!
