boot your computer to DOS for 9x and ME
type: scandisk /auto and hit enter - let it do it's thing. It should find any bad clusters and attempt to recover any data that is salvageable within the bad cluster, then mark the cluster as bad so it doesn't get used again.

For XP follow the instructions here:
http://www.computerhope.com/software/scandisk.htm
(Use the instructions for Windows 2000 - it's the same for both.)

If ATNO/TW suggestion can't get you going try this, works really good,
and is new ,and free.I used it on 2 trashed H/D in the last month, and fixed both.\

HDD Scan and Restoration Program 3.0
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4330.html

And this is a Disk Investigator 1.31
what it does is let you see reading the raw drive sectors
shows you all the hiiden stuff on the drive, and lets you
un-delete files that you deleted already ,,,and is free

http://www.majorgeeks.com/download1341.html

Smetimes if you can really see what on your drive ,
it just helps in regaining space, troubleshooting ,and
maintenance of the drive.

Side note: once you download HDD Scan and Restoration Program 3.0
you are going to have to put it on a floppy also ,to run it after reboot.
very easy instructions.

Looks like his first link "requires DOS" that will probably only work on the 9x and ME machines. The second one looks like it will work on all.

yep all other operating system other that Microsoft ,have there own Forums. lol

If you want to repair your H/D ,download the first one ,after you install
it and hit the exe icon ,it will ask you to put a floppy in and it will load it
up with the program,,,then when it's done ,just reboot with it still in the
floppy drive ,very easy instructions.

tha 2nd link is just to look at your H/D ..but after i looked at the program
again...it's a little advanced.lol

1st one will do you ,for fixing ....and don't say you don't have a floppy
drive ...they seem to think that by 2010 we may be able to really get
free of them ....but not now ! lol

ps :I have meet more people in 2004 that don't have a floppy drive
in there new P/C (that they paid WAY to much for ) that have had me
install one on the side. plus there dirt cheap .

HDD Health 2.1 Build 159
what it does is scans your drive and tells you it's health .
it can predict failures on your hard drives.lol ,if you can belive it

http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3654.html

All this stuff is free.

And if you no who makes your H/D ,they all have freeware ,
at there web sites that do diagnostic s on your drive.

This post is over 2 years old. I think they either fixed it or gave up by now.
