How many people have had their mother boards blow up and some how through a power surge protector killed the power to the building? Well I am one of those people, and I am often teased about it.

What probably blew up on your motherboard were capacitors that are a part of the voltage regulation circuits. Cheap power supplys will cause this, the voltages were probably out of spec leaving the power supply causing the circuits on the motherboard to be overloaded.
