okies thanks i tried it on a boot cd and it did pick it up but i have no idea who to us it on unbuntu lol :P

I use FreeBSD so Ubuntu may be a little different. Connect it to the machine and boot it. Login and run dmesg | more
The adapter will be listed if Ubuntu sees it.
Then use whatever the Ubuntu command is to get a DHCP address or the ifconfig -u command to give it a static IP.

In my case it would be
dhclient axe0
for a DHCP address.

well i got a not connected to a network at the top and i right click and clicked wireless. i get a window where i have to type in my network name and also the pass phrase which i've done but it doesn't connect i;m guessing cuz i'm on a bootable cd

I don't think you can use the Live CD for that. Install it on a PC if you have one and then go through the procedure that I described.
