Is there a jumper on the outside of it?

Look on the case of the drive itself. Is there anything that can be moved or adjusted on it? I don't expect that there is but that's the first thing to check.

Try the drive in another machine to see if it's a permissions problem.

That shouldn't happen at all. Where did you buy the drive and was it new?

Are you sure it's not a "road apple"? That's when either someone gives you a drive or a CD or you find it somewhere and it has a trojan on it. Ask your coworkers if they had the same problem.

Some USB Drives have little switches on the outside to be able to write to it. You could also try to right click on the drive under windows explorer and check to see if the usb stick is read-only.

He said that there was only a red light on it. I never would have tried to use it. I would have thrown it in the garbage.
