Hi guys, need your expertise for this problem...

I have a maxtor 250G hdd (3.5" external) plug to my CPU. My system can detect my hdd but not show a drive in My Computer.

Went to disk mgt to check and found that the hdd is in Dynamic while my OS hdd is basic. After some read up on web, i still do not know how to convert dynamic to baisc WITHOUT losing my data.. (Used to be my storage hdd)

I have two options (if not wrong)
1) Format hdd (losing all data)

2) Copy whole partition to another HDD (Basic). Format Dynamic hdd to basic. Transfer data back to formated hdd

Is 2nd option achievable?

Please advise..
Thanz...

EDIT: I will add that you should back up all your data on this drive prior to doing this. You run the risk of corrupting your data.

Does the drive have a drive letter associated to it? If not have you tried assigning one?

In the disk mgt, there is no drive letter associate to the hdd.
i did a right click, two options can be use.
1) import foreign disk (show error after clicked)
2) convert to basic (will lost data)

my cpu is using Window XP. will the process same as per webby?

What error do you get when you try to import the drive?

I have no idea if what I posted will work or not.

If all you have is data on the drive you should be able to copy it to wherever you want.

Hi,

the posted webby is based on window 2000.

Is Window xp work the same way?

Copying whole partition to another hdd will duplicate the same dynamic to the new hdd (even it is formated to baisc before transfer)?

XP is not much different from 2000, a lot of things designed for 2000 work just fine on XP.

If you copy data from a dynamic drive to a basic drive it does not convert the basic drive to dynamic.
