you would be looking for cpu temperature in that program you downloaded, if it's not listed then either there isn't one on your motherboard or the program can't find it, 45c is a little hot for the hard drive but still ok.

Does windows shut down like it normally does going through all the shutdown windows? or does the computer just power off straight away? if it powers off then your cpu is overheating.

The1 - By the way I've been reading his posts so far, we're looking at an instant shutdown. I didn't think the 42c was abnormally high for a processor (it's a processor temp he posted, btw -- not hard drive), but I suspect that reading was taking when not much was going on. I guess the direction I'm headed is that there starts to be some intense activity like a game that could overheat the processor.

PERL are you running a game, or can you describe what you are normally doing when this happens? From everything I've read so far, an instant shutdown like that is due to a processor overheating. Am I correct on that??

if that's the cpu then even under load that shouldn't be a problem only when you get to 60c + it's really a problem. But it still might be the issue because if the fan isn't working then it might idle ok but under load without a fan it'l get hot very quick

No, I never play games on my computer.
The only thing I do is internet.

And The1, yes it't an instant shut down.
I think ATNO/TW is right...the computer is overheating.
I would understand overheating at a computer that is full
of games and movies etc.

Could it be I made a wrong choice buying this computer?

Wow! That's a sleek looking computer. Didn't realize Sony had that one. Got a model number? Do some Google searching on the model number for overheating or problems, and see if others are experiencing that problem. First thing I thought of when I saw the picture is that there's barely any room in there for a fan. That's one tight little box.

Sony makes good products. Personally, I wouldn't have bought one just because I really don't like Sony's proprietary nature, but not because they don't have quality.
