so... I'm typing this out on the culprit laptop in question.
it works just fine on A/C power.

last week I got tired of being tethered to the wall and bought a new battery.
when I got the new battery it charged fine but only one time. the next day I went to unplug it and it dies on me immediately.

the new battery shows up in the power settings menu but with 1% remaining and 0% charge (the old one registers as unknown remaining and shows no battery present)

i'm thinking it can only be one of three things...

defective new battery
weak A/C charger
or the motherboard charging circuit

my bet is on the new battery or charger

There is a greater chance that it's the power supply before it's a defective battery.

Pull the battery out and check the pins on both the battery and where it plugs into the laptop. Had an employee with a similar problem and somehow he had inadvertently bent a couple of the pins. The battery plugged in OK and was recognized, but it wouldn't charge.

Dell has a notorious battery problem anyway http://www.dellbatteryprogram.com/
