I am running Windows XP Pro SP1. I took the A drive out of my HP pavilion and put it in my new hand built PC. When I first turned on my computer it gave me an error..I can't get it to give me the error any more for some reason. The read light on the fron to floppy drive stays on all the time..and I don't think its supposed to. When I try start > run A: it doesn't do anything but tell me to insert a disc..makes no noise at all. Only time the drive makes noise is for like 5 secs when I put a disc in. It also reads it in BIOS because it says 'Legacy Diskkette A:' I really need to fix this can anyone give me an idea?

Okies, your light's on all the time...

Unplug the cable from the back of the floppy, flip it over, and plug it back in the other way :)

You have it hooked up upside-down

just a side note, even if your cable is plugged in correctly, you still may not be able to use the floppy because it is disabled in bios

Yup, good point, but that wouldn't make the floppy drive's light stay on permanently :)

Hello. I have the same problem with my floppy drive, and I've tried switching the cable around and it still doesn't help. Do you guys have any other ideas?

Thanks!

My A drive doesn't work. The light is always on but when I put a floppy in it says please insert a disk in drive a. It makes noise like it is trying to read the disk for a few seconds. I've tried putting the cable in the other way, and it hasn't helped.

keep the cable how you had it originaly. Orginaly (with the cable in the original orientation) it had the light and made the noises with a floppy in it right?

It could just be a bad floppy disc, try a bunch of them.
My downstairs computer has a broken A drive it does exactly what yours does but i know its broken because it worked before. 3.5 inch floppy drives are only about 6 bucks for an internal one so if worse comes to worse youl have to buy a new one (oh no! ).

There is no real solution to this id advise you to buy anotha A: drive instead of attemtin to fix it as u could cause more damage!!! they cost around the area of £4.00 no more than £8.00 ther very cheap so dont attaempt to fix this ur self ok!!
