can i expect any better burn quality with a different kind of dvd, or am i stuck with bad quality?

Are you using any other programs to facilitate the burning such as DVD shrink?

no, i dont believe so, but then again i dont know what dvd shrink is.

basically, i just read the dvd to my computer, and then copy it off of my computer. this is the best way i could think of since they are protected.

i am just really dissapointed by the quality of my backups.

i should add that these are protected dvds, could that be the reason for poor quality?

is there any way i can get around the protection, since i own them?

The problem with software that removes the protection is that they are border-line illegal even if you are using it for DVD's you own. It is a very grey area. If you do a Google search for DVD free you will find quite a few links to software that will achieve this.
