are you talking about the drive or a CD-R disk? The main difference between a how a CD is read and a DVD is the color of the laser in the drive I think the regular CD's use a red laser and DVD's use a blue laser. The difference between the two colors relates to the light spectrum red is a wider beam and the blue is a narrower beam. Here is a site on the differences between CD-R and DVD-R, hope this helps

and to answer your question a little more clearly = no you can't.

otherwise, dvd technology would be useless and we'd all just use cd
drives instead. And this is of course for all the reasons that MD gave,
and that website he provided as well.

Well now I remenber another qestion about the same thing.

When I buy my computer it had a DVD/CD-R now, for some month my DVD player was working excelent, but them it started to freeze my computer everytime I put a DVD disk on it... the CD player would work fine. Them I had to change my disk drive, I changed to CD-RW. Now here comes the question

Do you know why the DVD player was acting this way?

Also could I install both drives in the same computer DVD, CD-RW ?

did you ever clean the lens? they sell discs to clean the lens of CD-roms, DVD-roms. Yes you can have two sepearte drives in the same computer, one DVD and the other CD-R.

here is an example of how to hook them up

Primary Master - HDD
Primary Slave - DVD
Secondary Master - HDD(extra storage) or CD-R
Secondary Slave - CD-R

the reason I have one on the primary chain and one on the secondary chain is for coping CD's, that configuration cuts down on the time it takes for a CD to be copied. Only if the DVD drive will read CD's. Enjoy :D

the case only has space for one drive? if the mother board has a primary and a secondary IDE chains then yes you can add more drives but I would suggest getting a bigger case and power supply (300watt at least). Enjoy :D
