:( Have a Maxtor 3000LE external harddrive, USB connected to a Pentium 4 HP Media Center. The HP is connected to a UPS, the Maxtor to a surge strip. (I know, :( )

Had a power failure, and the Maxtor now cannot be accessed (I/O Device Error). I figure I corrupted my MBR or whatever. How do I fix this? I am a PhD student, and keep no files on my harddrive (more lessons learned the hard way). Unfortunately, the Maxtor had not been backed up in 2 quarters of school. Needless to say, i am toast!

Help!

I would disconnect the 3000LE ,then go to the device manager.
right click on my computer, select properties, select
hardware, select device manager,go up to view tab ,and
select (devices by connection) look at your all your controllers there.
specialy USB (anything highlited with a yellow ! ) thats what were, looking for ...If it is (right click on it and UNINSTALL IT) alot of times
if you try to reload the drivers it just won't find it ! Now reboot ,and
you will find new hardware normal steps, then I would reboot 1 more
time then re-plug the 3000le back in and hopefully your good to go.
