Hey all -

I'm trying to replace the HDD in my external drive (it is failing as we speak):

I just can't tell what the drive is... Is it a SCSI/IDE/something else? What am I missing here? I opened it and it looks like the connection is shorter than a standard IDE cable. Ideas?

Thanks!

ok - i opened it up again after recovering my data and it looks like it is an ATA100. Do you think I can just drop in another one? Or is there special software on these things? Thanks in advance

Why don't you just connect that up instead of the old one?

i dont reccomend external hard drives..its really just a normal computer hard drive in a facy hard case with a usb connection port..and costs like $100 more than an internal HDD.

Yeah, but not everyone has IDE spots to spare.

Additionally, some people like to be able to take their data with them.

By the way, I bought a 20 dollar external IDE case from Newegg and a $50 250gb HD from woot.com and it works like a charm. 70 bucks for a nice 250gb external drive isn't too bad.
