So for Christmas I got an external DVD+-R/RW Writer from Emprex. the DVDRW 1016UI

Its Plug and Play. But when I plug it in it installs a different device to what I want, it installs "VOBID instantdrive CD SCSI cdrom device" when it should be "DVDRW USB 16X "

Any advice on what I should do?

VOBID instant drive CD SCSI cdrom device is installed by Pinnacle http://computercops.biz/startuplist-4117.html That is a virtual drive created by the Pinnacle program.

Once you plug it in, does Windows initiate an install?

Em. You can try this . remove the previous driver by clicking at
My Computer >> Control Panel >> System >> Hardware >> Device Manager >> DVD/CDROM DRIVES and remove the previous driver for the dvdrw.

then plug in the external dvdrw and click refresh. If there is auto-install popup than follow them. Use the CD provided with the hardware. If no auto-install, try ADD NEW HARDWARE at control panel and use automatic, if still not working.. try to install them manually and try to look into their .inf files for the correct driver.

Hope this'l help you out a lil' bit.

The mentioned drive is manufactured by BTC(BTC 1016uI). I checked Emprex Website there is a Firmware upgrade for it. I guess you would need to contact Emprex and see what they say. You might try to do a firmware upgrade, after the upgrade it might show as a 1016uI DVD/RW Drive.

I would check with them first before doing anything.

Good Luck
