Hardware Speaker

I wa wondering if there were any adverse effects to removing your hardware speaker,
simply because I don't like things beeping at start up

(the reason I am cautious about this stuff, as supposed to doing trial & error, is having gone through 2 motherboards in the past 3 years )

LOL ,Thats a reason right there (motherboards) the post beeps are for
troubleshooting.
When a PC starts up, the first thing it does is run a Power-on Self Test (POST) to test the computers hardware. If it detects an error, you will be notified by either a number of audio beeps or an error message on the screen. This page helps to explain what the error message or audio beeps mean.

Standard POST Error Codes

1 short beep System is OK
2 short beeps POST Error - error code shown on screen
No beep Power supply or system board problem
Continuous beep Power supply, system board, or keyboard problem
Repeating short beeps Power supply or system board problem
1 long, 1 short beep System board problem
1 long, 2 short beeps Display adapter problem (MDA, CGA)
1 long, 3 short beeps Display adapter problem (EGA)
3 long beeps 3270 keyboard card

This is the motherboard helping you to repair it ,with the audible
post that it gives off at boot time.

Now if you want to turn the speaker off (you will still hear posts from MOBO) but not loud.

Windows 95/98/Me

You can open Device Manager by double-clicking on the System icon in Control Panel, and choosing the Device Manager tab. It is also accessible by right-clicking on My Computer, selecting Properties, and selecting the Device Manager tab. Getting to the Device Manager this can require up to six mouse clicks, but there is an easier way.

Open an Explorer window, and select your Start Menu folder (under your Windows directory). It doesn't have to go here, but it's as good a place as any.
Select New and then Shortcut from the File Menu.
In the field labelled Command Line, type C:\WINDOWS\CONTROL.EXE Sysdm.cpl, System,1 (replace C:\WINDOWS\ with your Windows directory, if different).
Click Next, type Device Manager for the name of this shortcut, and press Finish when you're done.
There will now be a shortcut directly to Device Manager in your Start Menu.
Windows 2000/XP

You can open Device Manager by double-clicking on the System icon in Control Panel, choosing the Hardware tab, and clicking Device Manager.

Fortunately, Device Manager can be more easily run by launching devmgmt.msc - just create a shortcut to the file (as described above), and launch it at any time.

your going to need those beeps for that 3rd motherboard..lol

also if you have external speakers,hooked to the sound card
then take it out ,and this is predicated on the speaker being
attached to the inside of the case ! correct....don't be yanking
anything off the MOBO...lol

I wouldn't recommend it. Those beeps are bios codes and can help you identify hardware failures. You should use them as a valuable tool. It's good to be prepared before you need them. To identify your BIOS manufacturer just watch the post screen for the name of the BIOS manufacturer, such as AMI Bios from American Megatrends. Then find their code scheme and print it off for future reference.

To give an example of the value, an employee brought in his home computer this week because it wouldn't boot up at all. Just gave a series of odd beeps. I had to actually look at his motherboard to get the BIOS manufacturer. Once I did, I looked up the error code. It suggested the problem was a bad motherboard. I looked at his mother board again and saw a small area which appeared to have bubbled/melted. It was tiny, but I'm sure it was the cause. And it only took me ten minutes to identify the problem because of understanding these codes.

Would it be fine to leave off, then just plug it in when my computer isn't booting?

You will still hear it, but very low in volume, unless your motherboard is ancient,
your MOBO has it's own very small speaker mounted on it.

Thing was it's been so long since i have seen a PC case with a
speaker installed in it ,OLDER motherboards did not have a speaker on them ,thats why there was an internal speaker
attached to the inside of the front of the case
And to me anything older than 5 years old ,is very ancient.lol

It's not connected to anything though. Never noticed that before.

What alot of people do is when they take the speaker out ,
it's perfect for another Case Fan for more cooling.

I had a tower once that had a really loud and annoying PC speaker on the motherboard. What I ended up doing is just filling the hole in it with hot glue. It supresses the vibration of whatever the membrane is in there so it is nice and quiet. You could still here it if you needed to for a POST code or such, but you had to put your ear on the case.
