Hi guys

I believe I am opening thread in correct folder. A friend of mine handed over me his laptop to fix some problem. He formatted his C: drive and installed new windows xp, he said he did not formatted D drive where his all data is located. But later after installation of xp when he tried to access D drive that is not accessable and after a long wait windows gives error "The disk is drive D is not formatted", but my friend says he did not formatted D drive.

Please let me know how I can recover data from D drive, I don't know what is happened to his laptop that is extremely very very slow now. The partition he selected is NTFS and his laptop is Toshiba Satellite.

I am trying to find some way to recover his data, please help me and give you suggestion as this is urgent.

If you know Linux, boot with a Live CD. I like backtrack 3.

If you can't do that, then I would buy an external SATA HD enclosure & connect it to another PC.

Personally, I think his data is gone.

Your friend most likely created a separate partition so he could keep his data when he re-formatted. His data is gone because you reformatted C:\ (the local disk). If he wanted to do this he should have either purchased an external drive or he should have split the drive into to drives. That way when you wipe one partition you don't kill the other partition.

Windows XP keeps on saying to format because that drive is not formatted and in order to access that drive it needs to be formatted to either FAT32 or NTFS. (It will mostly be NTFS because FAT32 is only used for smaller Hard Drives about 15GB or less I think.)

Your best bet now is to look into software that can recover data from a Hard Drive even if it formatted or not. Software like this requires you to pay though >.>. And software like this does exist, police use it to recover data on computer that have been completely wiped -___-.... that's right your porno viewers at work beware!! Even if you deleted everything they will take the Hard Drive and use their software and bring your porn back to life >:O!!!

Hope I helped =) (disregard the last paragraph >:D)

Hi guys

Thanks every body for helping me. Someone give me hint of "diskinternals ntfs recovery" software. I downloaded that and also got free serial number and that worked fine. I think diskinternals ntfs recovery is the best software to recover data from formatted partition.
