Hey all -

I'm thinking about building a new system. I primarily use it for high end graphics processing - mostly multi-tasking with some pretty major resource hog apps (pshop, flash, etc). I also do some online gaming - Guild wars, mostly, but would probably play the sims if I got it. No video editing.

Here's the question: I see about a 100+% increase in price from an AMD 2.2GHz processor and an AMD 3.0GHz processor - here are the ones I'm looking at:

AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+(65W) 2.2GHz Socket AM2 Processor - Retail ($75)

* 2000MHz HT
* 90 nm Windsor
* 2 x 512KB L2 Cache

and

AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+ 3.0GHz Socket AM2 Processor - Retail ($170)

* 2000MHz HT
* 90 nm Windsor
* 2 x 1MB L2 Cache

is the difference that noticeable to justify the price difference? I want to update my mobo, processor, graphics card and RAM to get a speedy system, but don't want to buy what I don't need. I'm not sure if my power unit can support what I need, so I may have to get that too. I have IDE drives I'd like to use, as well, if I don't absolutely need to update to SATA.

Anyone have suggestions? I have an ATX case and all the rest of the goodies (dvd/etc drives). I have only one copy of WinXP home and really don't want vista. Is it worth it to upgrade to XP 64 bit if I'm getting this new chip? And will all my apps work?

as you see - I'm not that technical but I want to learn.

any help and suggestions are appreciated.

a great help would be a budget, how much do you have to spend?

the AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+ will do better at multi tasking cuz of the higher speed and also bigger cache.

for gaming i would say about 1GB of ram would be fine and 512MB graphics card.
