is it a brand new, never-before-been-used hard drive?

If so, fdisk it to create some partitions.

Windows doesn't see "drives". Windows sees Partitions contained on those drives - and only partitions that are in a filesystem that Windows can understand.

Let me get this straight. You have a shortcut to the drive on your desktop and you are currently using it? How are you doing that? What is the target in the properties of the shortcut? What do you get when you click the shortcut to open it? Does it bring up Windows Explorer? If so, what drive letter is it showing? In theory, your second hard drive should be drive D: Your primary hard drive C: and then your CD and/or DVD should be E: and F: respectively.

Also what operating system are you using? There's something about your question that just doesn't seem right.

Hi ATNO,
Target properties for C:\Documents and Settings\Dave Cox\Desktop draged to desktop Windows Explorer is opened showing (F:) drive showing the folder created and this is what is showing when I click find target on the shortcut properties.

In properties of (C:) drive the following are listed:-

(C:) S.T.* Local Drive Location O (0) Primary drive
(F:) W.D.C* Location1 (1:) Secondary
(however (F:) is not listed under local drive)
* Is the name of the H/Ds

(A:) 3.5

(D:) CD DVD ROM location O (O) Primary

(E:) TDK CD RW Location 1 (1) Secondary

Operating system Windows XP Pro

Hope this helps to solve my problem.
Many thanks
